Crown won't screw down

I have a GMT Master 1675 and one day the crown would no longer screw down . The stem was bent very slightly at the point were it screws into the crown.
I replaced the stem and still have the same problem.
The crown will push in to about where the treads would engage but not quite far enough to feel the threads. It seems as if the stem is too long but the replacement stem is the same length as the original.
I would much appreciate any help on this issue.

Sounds like the first threads may be stripped. Sounds like you may need a new tube and crown.

. . .
The crown itself is a multi-piece mechanism with an inner spring and socket. When you press it down it compresses in order to engage the threads - the stem doesn't move or compress at all, it only rotates.

If the inner crown mechanism is failing to collapse and "disengage" itself, it will not engage the tube threads. Sounds like it took a knock that both bent the end of the stem and the collapsable part of the crown. The fix is a new crown as well as a new stem.

Am just curious knowing little or nothing re the "inners" - but does the stem not move in and out for hands setting?

Yes, sorry for not being clear. It is definitely pulled in or out to do it's various functions. I was merely referring to the crown screw-down/winding position 1; which was the question.
