How could a resale Rolex come with an open warranty card
Every Rolex I've got the AD insisted that I filled out my name and date at the time of purchase. How could it be possible that a Rolex from other sources contains an open warranty card?

Many AD's work with GM dealers and leave paperwork open for their final sale. Also, Rolex will re-issue warranty cards in the event of a new watch return to an AD.

Well, paperwork is meaningless if blank and issued by a GM.
I've never had it happen to me, but others assert their ADs have left: totally blank paper, AD stamped, but otherwise blank paperwork, or stamped and owner's name entered and date left blank. If you're a flipper this helps. |

Would the purchaser of a Rolex with open papers be entitled to the Rolex warantee? I thought the purchaser's name and the AD must appear on the papers for Rolex to validate the warantee? Why would any AD put their good name on open papers?

If the AD stamp is there, you can fill in your name for warranty work, as long as it is within a reasonable timeframe! Personally, I would leave the papers open until you have to.

I've never asked (because I don't care) but have never been offered the option either. And I've been offered some wild options too, like selling me an MSRP SS Daytona and then buying it right back from me for a profit. |

In the states it is a huge no no to leave the warranty card or papers "open". It is Rolex's policy that the card be filled out at time of purchase, and a AD can get in serious trouble if they get caught. My AD follows Rolex's policy 100%, it's not worth the AD status.
As far as transfer of warranty, like I said, my AD follows Rolex's policy's and they will warranty a watch with someone else's name on it as long as it falls under the 2 year period. I know many people think that it is not transferable, and people argue back and forth over the topic, but I know from person experience that Rolex will fix a watch if it falls under the warranty period, no matter who's name is on the paperwork. Seriously, if you walked into a AD with a watch that had a issue, gave the guy the warranty card, do you really think that he or she would question the name on the card. Has anyone ever had to show ID when they take a watch in for service, the answer is no.

This happens quite often. If you have a good relationship with your AD and you ask him when you purchase it is usually not a problem.
