In house safe to store Rolex's
Hi,
Can anyone who uses a heavy duty security safe to store valuables such as your Rolex's and other belongings post pictures of your security safe and recommened me a decent one. My main criteria is that it should stand fire for about 1 -2 hours, solid build quality, atleast weight a total of more than 100kg. There are so many safes out there im stuck regarding which one to get. The ones ive found so far don't seem to look solid enough. I would also like to know which ones are recommended i.e key safe's or digital safe's and which other features high quality safes use which are useful. Im a novice when it comes to safes. Thank you, trek |

Go get a good gun safe.....
Dial combo is always best. Look in your phone book for local safe stores and start looking... Ask them prices and fire ratings (they will tell you how long it will stay fire safe inside). Get one bigger than you imagine you would need.

Cabellas does have nice safes BUT sometimes
you can get something with a much higher rating from a local locksmith/safestore. Keep in mind MOST people put the safe in a dark or hidden part of their house (SMART MOVE). Why buy a safe thats all painted up with a bunch of hoopla on the outside etc... Get a good basic flat finish so you wont notice every little knick when you bump into it. If you plan on putting the safe out in the open where guests can see it, it will only be a matter of time till someone breaks into your house.... I am a gun collector BUT I have never understood the people who buy a fancy safe and put it right in their living room.

i'm quite pleased with my amsec - www.amsecusa.com. if you go with amsec, i recommend the electronic control, it's fantastic.
just remember with any fire safe you need to have humidity control. |

Search on google should throw up plenty of choice, though not a lot of gun safes available in the UK!

With regards to safes, In the Uk they have to have insurance or cash ratings, if te safe you chose hase a cash rating of £10.000 then it has a insurance rating of £100.000 to cover jewelry.
eurovault make a great safe at the cost of about 500 - 700 which should cover your need they are a grade one safe, and get the one with a key. They have to be bolted to a concrete sub floor or external wall. any more help required contact me, more than pleased to help marke |

I thought you guys were talking about wall safes initially.
Unless one of these safes bolts down or weights 200+ lbs, I'm not sure how it'll help.

A safe deposit box is the way to go IMO. Have the family take a hunters safety course. Get an alarm, a good dog and a 9mm. Yes the safe deposit box is a tad inconvenient, but you know that you stuff is safe, insured and you never have to worry.

I just put in a little safe with internal dimensions of approx 20"x16"x16". Fire rated for 2 hours. Total weight about 500 Ibs and I bolted it to a concrete floor. Comes with a combo and key lock.
It wasn't cheap at about $1700 AUD installed but I don't think it will be going anywhere. I also have a German Shepard and live in a relatively safe semi rural area. The funniest thing is that the guy's that installed the safe looked incredibly dodgy. They didn't see the dog but I let them know that she was big and aggressive. |

The safe can be average. The german shepherd should be big, mean and hungry. The Glock should be loaded.

My advise as others is to look only a comercial rated safes, the consumer grade stuff is garbage and has no real security. At one work we used a consumer grade for narcotics --- would break on avg. every 10 months, and sometimes closed. Us "amatures" could breach it in about 20 min.
What I have had good luck doing is buying safes at store closing sales --- offten for 200 bucks or so you can get a big, nice safe that would be a few K new. Moving with a rental truck with ramp, a come-a-long and a few friend motivated by free beer is not all that hard. |
