1680 Top Hat Crystal Questions...

Hi, I don't make it over here as often...but here's a Vintage Sub-related question.

I was looking at a 1680 ~1979 last night at a semi-local dealer. The well-known Fourtanes...

The Crystal was, well...crystal clear with a bevel round the edge. I believe this means a service Crystal?

Question...Are the original versions with no bevels really hard to come by - or do they exist? Wondering why folks would opt for the bevel variety.

The watch I was eyeing looked great otherwise...except for the price. Wish I had purchased one about 5+ years ago.

The beveled edge crystals are original. The flat edge ones are service

There is a very small bevel on the top side of the original Cyclope 127 crystal for the Submariner 1680.

Thank you as well...

I believe the crystal I was looking at had a more pronounced bezel.

The service crystals have a much larger bevel at the top.

Sorry, but this statement is incorrect. I've sold quite a few of these on here and VRF. The tall- flat with no bevels are the original top-hat. These came first. The tall - with smaller bevel were the next generation. The ones with prominent bevels were the service.

Didn't know this, is anyone able to post photo's of all three for comparison, or the non-bevel and larger bevel to compare with the slight bevel in Springers photo's.

Hmm, everything I’ve seen and read says otherwise.. but I’ll stand corrected if proven otherwise!

I don't know much about the C127, but here are 2 pictures I just took.
I hope this helps.

This is my supposedly original top hat with sharp 90 degree edge.

I blame it on the autoconnect.

That is a stunning photo

Great info and the photo of the bevel almost half way down the side is noticeably different to the Loevhagen and Springer ones

Yes. Underpin very slight - and on some older plexi polished with e.g. Polywatch, the very slight bevel might be almost vanished.

I tried to take some pictures from my -78 1680. I have the unpolished original, a service crystal from -11 and a service crystal from -17(currently mounted). I never really noticed the tiny bevel on the old service crystal before. I had to angle it a bit to make it show. The original is never polished and has several scratches and a small chip in it. Maybe it had a small bevel and it got rounded throughout the years just by being used? My brother dived with it for many years.

this is the original "top-hat" crystal. The service crystal has a much larger bevel. The original is still available, but quite expensive.

Mine appears to be the service one. Doesn't really bother me either way - crystals are disposable parts.

And, all together now, "It's a chamfer, not a bevel!"
