Nearly got scammed
I posted a WTB for a Pam 161 on Paneristi and after a few days I got a hit. I waited a couple of weeks and responded. The guy had the 161. I told him I had trust issues and needed references and pictures of everything that comes with the watch. He sends a bunch of pictures that looked pretty good but none of the pictures showed everything together. It showed box and papers and then a picture of the watch on its black cushion. I asked for everything together as there were one set of pictures of the watch with bracelet on and another with the strap. I asked for pictures of the watch as it is today. He sends numerous pictures of the watch showing today's date. So I'm still not sure so I google search that watch and look through a bunch of pictures and there it is. The exact same picture that he sent me on a dealer site. That guy thought I wouldn't check and just believe him. His one reference did respond saying he was a good seller. Obviously they were together. Honestly I have never had so much trouble trying to buy a good watch. I don't even know how to be sure I'm not getting ripped off.

Go to an official retailer. I also have trust issues. I would never buy very expensive things online.

I agree, you should definitely vet the seller. There are so many trusted sellers here, WUS etc, just do a little homework and you'll minimize your chances. I've personally purchased from DavidSW and Takuya, and both were top notch.

If he's a member here you need to name him.

Ask some of the trusted sellers on here if they can source one for you. I would never buy a Pam of a random person on the internet, not only because of the potential for a scam, but because of the very high risk of getting a fake.

I don't think I would buy anything from a seller on here. Ebay, yes. If you have major trust issues try to go a local AD

Ask for a picture of the watch set to a certain unusual time like 7.22 and with today's paper. The date is too broad to indicate possession. And never use bank transfer or paypal gift if the seller is not well known.

Spend some time reading on here, there are some sellers with stellar reputations and they are the safest thing after an AD. As for ebay? Pam fakes are so convincing and so ubiquitous you're asking to get burned.

First post; you'd put ebay above the sellers here?

Paneristi is the worst. I posted a PAM 127 and some guy stole all my pics and tried to sell it as his own. It took me a month to convince a potential buyer that I was the real seller and not the scammer. Gave him everything about me short of my social security number haha

This is probably the wrongest advice I've ever read on here. Unbelievable

I wouldn't touch Paneristi's sales corner with a 10-foot pole. That's like a jungle in there.
And always, buy the seller, not the watch. :)

I've done a good dozen or so deals on here with zero issues. Even made friends in the process. I even feel more comfortable dealing with TRF folks over eBay.

He did specifically say "dealing with TRF folk over eBay". There's a difference

Yeah, I've also had bad experiences with the Paneristi sales corner. Not sure why it attracts so many scammers.

I keep hearing how Panerai fakes are so good now that the secondary market is suffering. If funds permit, I always prefer the ad option. Maybe I'm paranoid but that seller you trust could have been duped as well. In fact, I am paranoid.

I used to follow the Paneristi boards for a few years. It is a great place with great members who have really bonded and formed friendships. That said, the sales corner has had a lot of scam attempts / scams over the years.
