Watch Storage
Hi all,
I'm looking for some general advice, recommendations, best practices, do's and don'ts, etc... on watch storage. My my Rolex link bracelet watches I've defaulted to keeping them on a winder. It's nice for switching quickly between watches during the week, but honestly even my GMTII isn't that hard to set from scratch. Even on the winder there is the natural drift in time, so I've found myself setting the time after not wearing a watch for some time. Lately I've been adding non link bracelet watches to my collection. I've never felt comfortable putting a leather banded watch on the winder - the stress on the band just didn't make me feel comfortable. These watches have sat on their side on top of my winder as a result. I've started to wonder if I would be better served getting rid of the winder completely and opting for a different storage solution that could hold everything. Preferably something with a lid, and that I can easily put away for safe keeping when away from home. So some specific questions: 1. How do you prefer to store your watches and why? 2. Which non winding cases would you recommend? 3. When placing a Rolex link bracelet watch on my nightstand for the night (not in a winder/case), what's the best way to place the watch (face down, on the side, etc...)? 4. For storage, should I unscrew the crown? And of course, I'm interested in hearing any other opinions on this topic. Thanks, Max |

My watches sit on stands from their respective vendors or in their boxes.

A winder is more for convenience, not essential at all....when not in use I put the watches I'm not wearing back in their individual boxes that they come in...the watch I'm wearing for that period of time at night I use a basic watch stand for simplicity.....when any watch is not in use I never unscrew the crown. I only unscrew the crown for winding and setting the time/date etc.

When I'm not wearing my watch at night, I put on nightstand with dial up so I can see what time it is if I get up.

My rotation is a grand total of two watches. Sometimes I'll wear my GMT2 Pepsi for 3-4 days straight, so my Omega Speedmaster goes on a Versa winder I got from Amazon for $50. It's silent, dependable, and costs a fraction of what a Wolf would cost.

I keep my watches with leather, sailcloth or NATO in the same winder as those with bracelets. I like everything being in one place, even those that don't need to be wound. And I purchased a relatively inexpensive winder with a display front so I could see the contents and admire them from afar. ;-)

Use a glass topped watch case to hold all my watches. Had winders (Orbita)
but the time drift and diff calander days threw them anyway, needing adjustment. An old watch affficienato told me not to bother with winders as they just increase wear and tear, Let em rest. |

The search function will provide a wealth of information on all those questions as they have been debated over time ad nauseum. Cheers

I have a Wolf Winder with storage for 3 additional watches on top with pillows. Perfect for my 4 watch rotation right now.

I bought 2 very cheap compact camera cases off eBay, from a recommendation from this forum a while back they are padded, rugged, zipped, and I leave the two watches I am not wearing in them and put them in the safe, face up. When it comes to the time to change a watch, I find it really satisfying to wind them and set the time, and that must take at least 30 seconds.

I keep my JLC in my safe as it does not get as much wrist time. My AP and Milgauss take turns on a wolf watch winder when the other is being worn

Never quite understood the need for a winder. Unless you have a super complicated Patek and don't want to try and figure out how to reset it, I don't see the need. I have a pretty large collection (accumulation) which I wind every couple of weeks. Why the constant wear on the watch??? I don't keep my car running 24/7 to keep the oil circulation.
The best watch storage is in a safe. |

1. How do you prefer to store your watches and why?
On my wrist 24/7... or stashed away somewhere. 2. Which non winding cases would you recommend? Whatever is cheap on Amazon that is padded. 3. When placing a Rolex link bracelet watch on my nightstand for the night (not in a winder/case), what's the best way to place the watch (face down, on the side, etc...)? On your wrist. Who has time to take their watch off... and why? 4. For storage, should I unscrew the crown? Naaa. And of course, I'm interested in hearing any other opinions on this topic. Just wear it / them. Winders are maybe good if you have a perpetual calendar with moonphase and other complications and only wear it rarely. Even then, it grows old dealing with too many watch complications imho. Fortunatly, Rolex is easy to set and forget so dont see the need for winders.

Agreed, but if all we did was come here and search old conversations, wouldn't that be pretty boring? I think new conversation, even on old topics, is a good thing. But hey, that's just me.

Orbita winders. Runs on batteries for up to 6 years and you can put the winder with a watch inside your safe.

I keep all except one in the bank but I am thinking of getting the Wolf Savoy watch box in piano black...they look well constructed.

I am not sure whether reading the third thread on a very tired, often debated, conundrum qualifies as exciting!!! But hey that's just me!!
