New old Rolex

Greetings! New to the group. I inherrited a 1962 Rolex GMT Pepsi as a wedding present and i absolutly love it! My father had been wearing the exact same watch as this one for 30+years. I know they are durable and dependable. I also know it is very valuable. My question is, am i crazy to make this am everyday wear watch?

Congrats on the wonderful wedding gift. I would make sure it's been serviced in the last 6 years or so and enjoy daily.

Absolutely not! Wear it as often as you like. Watches are meant to be worn.

But from the looks of your watch, it needs some serious tlc from a competent watchmaker. And what did they use for a seconds hand?

There are plenty of us who wear old Rolex every day.

Your hands are shot and perhaps the lume plots are degrading. Those should be stabilized to keep any of the particles from getting into the movement.

With all the lume off the hands it is likely that it is inside the watch movement so a complete overhaul is in order. To do it right it won't come cheap, but perhaps a good watchmaker can also source some period correct hands.

Thanks for the advice! Yes the paint and luminescence is faded from the hands. I heard that means replacing the whole watch face. About how pricey is it? It keeps time pretty well. Could the paint chips stop the watch movement?

The paint is all faded from the hands. What other flaws do you see?

Other than the deteriorated lume from the hour, minute and 24hr hands, the seconds hand doesn't look correct.

I hope you get it all sorted out. Properly serviced, that watch can last for another 30 years at least!

Deteriorated?
The lume is long gone.
And yes the Seconds hand is not right.

The watch is very vintage, and is a pointed crown guard GMT 1675. The dial appears to be a correct an original gilt dial. Have the hands repaired , find a correct seconds hand and have a service done to the movement.

If you're new to this fancy watch game...

I suggest you be sitting down before reading the service quote.

I didn't know that without the lume the hands were 'hollow', I thought that the lume was applied onto flat areas of the hands as opposed to it filling empty areas. I know that I haven't explained that very well but I hope that you know what I mean.

I believe the seconds hand is wrong but actually, I think it looks OK and it adds to the watch's storey, so if you aren't totally into originality I'd be tempted to leave it.

I'll now take cover ready for the flaming!

Niiiice ! I'd love to have that

Don't send it a Rolex service Center either. Post your location and maybe you have a top CW21 watchmaker near you who bring it back to life.

Rolex Service Center will either destroy it or maybe it's to old ?

Bracelet looks shot. Maybe a trip to Mike Young will fix that. Just the bracelet not the whole watch.

Bruce

If I were in your position, I would get the watch serviced by Rolex but tell them that they must leave the dial and hands untouched on the pain of death.

Once you know the mechanism is rocking, yes wear it every day but don't go fighting man eating sharks below the surface of the ocean type of thing.

That is a beautiful watch that many men would sell their wives and daughters for, so yes wear it every day and enjoy it.

Regards

Mick

The picture is a little fuzzy.

Can you post one in focus so it appears like this?

I am in upstate South Carolina USA. Finding someone I trust to service it will be a challenge. Open to suggestions. The bracelet is a flex strap. Still have the original though...here is a slightly better pic.

Be nice to find an independent watchmaker to sort out the hands (repair and corrected second hand) and service. Call up LA watchworks...they'll take care of this right IMO.

I would send it to RSC Geneva for a complete overhaul. Yes it will be pricey but you got the watch for free. Sometimes it pays to pay the extra.
