Trying on the Datejust 36

I went to the RSC couple of days ago cause my new sub missed 2 minutes a day....they were kind enough to fix it on the spot. While waiting I tried the Datejust 36 silver dial with index markers..absolutely amazing. Just then I realized the meaning of great proportions. This watch is certainly not too small, beautifully made & the silver dial blends very nicely with the jubilee bracelet. I didn’t buy it cause I just got the sub, but Honestly I was so surprised, I had to share it. I think with Rolex it’s just that...people might think, oh submariner, just another diving watch, right till the second they put it on the wrist. 36 Datejust, isn’t it too small, again, right till you see it in person. Their watches don’t look like anything else.

It's a classic and 36mm is the perfect size. I'm generally a sports watch fan but I love my DJ. It's just a change of pace and it's so comfortable you don't know your wearing it - like a puff or air on the wrist.

All the models look great but I favour the fluted bezel, Jubilee, silver stick dial configuration.

Now you've tried one on I predict you'll be getting one in the future!

36 is a good size as long as your wrist isn't to large.

Apart from the hidden clasp ( which is a great look) the new so called "Super Jubilee" is better made with stronger links and feels far less flimsy than the old one. It's tougher and less prone to stretch than the old one.

Yes. The new cases have slightly beefier lugs. The look suits the watch very well and gives it a slightly more modern stance on the wrist.

In the last four months I've been on a bit of a "journey".

Happy with my 1994 DJ36 16233 for 15 years...



Then I became infatuated with the GMT & Sub "look", probably mostly from coming on these damned forums where there's a kind of fever that the Sports Watch look is the "must have" trend. On reflection that may be because every manufacturer (including Rolex) seems to have a slant on how a dive watch should look following Blancpain's lead, and so there are many, many owners of all brands extolling the virtues of this type.

So I bit. A 1996 Sub Date was purchased, having tried on countless GMTs & Subs...



After 2 weeks I tried my DJ36 on again, and it had SHRUNK!! Suddenly it no longer looked right on my 7 1/2" wrist. Still, that was good news as the Sub was now my new love... or was it? The DJ36, being of no use to me, was p/ex'd against my wife's new DJ31 (her DJ26 had suddenly become too small for her to read the time, 2 weeks after I git the Sub!) and at that time I tried on the new DJ36 and DJ41. The 36 was still too small for my new (perhaps brainwashed?) view of what suits my wrist. The DJ41 was better. Hmmm... I really like that...

After 4 weeks I'd fallen out of love with the Sub. It seemed flimsy, cheap (maybe because so many people DO wear cheap divers?) and really rather underwhelming. Not a thing of beauty.

Back to my AD to try on the DJ41 again. I'd been eyeing a version on t'internet not available on the configurator, but seen on Chrono24 in Hong Kong. TT with jubilee & fluted bezel. Lo and behold, my AD had the exact same model. They couldn't understand either why they had a version Rolex don't offer, but it seemed like fate to me.

So last Friday I p/ex'd the Sub (for what I paid) against the DJ and now, finally, I've come full circle to another DJ, albeit a little larger, that will hopefully last another 15 years...



As to which size? It certainly is all about your wrist size and YOUR perception of what's right, influenced or not by the righteousness of forum members all over the globe.

All of those watches look great on you. I sometimes think the large watch craze has almost exclusively been perpetrated by guys on forums egging each other on to go bigger and bigger. 36mm has a classical elegance to it and I think it suits most average sized wrists from 6 to 8 inches. I speak as someone who wears watches from 36mm (DJ) to 47mm (PAM372) on a smallish but flat and long 6.5 wrist.

Personally, I like the 41. But I've become accustomed to bigger style watches. so its hard to downsize visually at one point.

I am finding I enjoy the 36mm classic DJ more and more (I have a 6.75" wrist).

I was traveling on business recently and stopped off in a Rolex AD on a whim. Struck up a conversation with the saleslady and she brought out a 116234 blue with stick dial. That color is totally amazing and I had a hard time keeping my eyes off it. She said the store has had this one for awhile and they wanted to move it...and quoted me close to a 25% discount.

I had to turn her down (barely) as I am looking for a 16710 right now...but who knows? Maybe I will go back for that blue after all....

After running the gamet of Rolex I settled on a 36 DJ 116200. It's everything I need and nothing I don't.

Accustomed is a good word, but it hits suddenly. It must be to do with the fashion and other's opinions, but putting a new DJ36 on my wrist made me feel like I was wearing a woman's watch.

But what the hell... my old jubilee was a little worn, and had hollow links, no Easylink, and the 16233 was gaining and had a chipped & scratched glass - a sure sign of a service needed soon. AND I p/ex'd it for 50% more than I paid for it! Note the "trying to justify it" tone? I'll continue... AND the DJ41 is my first NEW Rolex, plus it has a great new movement and keeps "perfect" time, and everyone should have a new Rolex after 15 years, and lots of other stuff which makes me, and you, clammer to get a Rolex on yer wrist!

The fact is that most men's watches today are considered fashionable by women- particularly Subs and Daytonas. There is a video on You Tube in which three fashionable ladies discuss their love of 44-47mm Panerais. That does not make them bi-sexual or women's watches.

The 36mm DJ is a time honoured men's watch. I think many confuse "dressy" with feminine. Most DJ's are certainly more dressy than their sports counterparts.

It takes a real man to wear 36mm

I've got two DateJust 41s , I also have quite small wrists so could have probably gone for the 36 if I'd wanted.
My biggest regret though is not getting the silver dial on a Jubilee and with a fluted bezel , they one on in the AD when I purchased mine and it looked amazing

After wearing my DJ41 & Sub 14060m for a few weeks, I decided to put my 116200 with oyster braclet on for an airing. Jeezo it felt small, and everyone else I seen at work etc had a bigger watch. I almost traded it in for a 42mm watch, but I made myself wear my 36mm 116200 for a week to make sure I wasn't gonna sell something I once loved....I fell completely in love with it again and won't be letting it go. On conclusion it's very easy to be swayed by other people's perception of what's right...I almost fell into that trap....I have quite large wrists at 7 & 3/4 and my 36mm datejust looked perfect

earlier this year I was able to get a 116200. I really find the size perfect for my wrist (I am average build). Of the many watches I have had over the years I find this one wears the best on my wrist. I think proportions matter when it comes to watches. It makes sense for a larger gentleman or lady to wear a 42mm watch and it will look incredible. My buddy is definitely taller and more built than I and his huge breitlings look great on him. But for me the 36mm is my ideal size for all occasions.
