Anyone had the neighbours from hell?

Hello,

The house next to us recently got rented out after been vacant for awhile. The last 2 lots of tenants just sucked - they would yell and scream, slam doors, have large gatherings making noise all hours of the night during the week as well as the weekend.

It looks like the new lot are more of the same. The area i live in has a pretty poor reputation and is known as an "ethnic enclave". To make things worse the homes are very close together and have poor noise insulation.

My wife (newlyweds) and i work quite stressful jobs and we hate coming home to these noisy inconsiderate people next door. We have great relations with all our other neighbours, but this rental property next door has always been a problem since the original owners moved out and decided to rent it out.

We are saving hard so that we can move to a better area - but it won't be for at least another couple of years.

I'm getting quite depressed. Anyone else have a similar story or can offer advice or encouragement?

I am seen as the neighbor from hell. Beer cans in yard, Lynyrd Skynyrd music playing at all hours, drag racing in the cul-de-sac, ex-strippers hagnging out, draging the TV outside to watch football every Saturday and Sunday, big bonfires to keep warm when watching football outside, tire art littered throughout the yard, grey water system used to water the yard, kids crying and beating on the door trying to go in-doors, dogs barking, pregnant cats all over, animal traps all over the yard and the list goes on and on.......

To be honest I do feel your pain as not being able to relax when you come home is not only annoying, but bad for your mental and physical health. The worst thing you can do is deal with those people on a face to face basis as they don't care and will even act worse. I know from experience. Let the police handle things. Hope it gets better.

No matter where we have lived, there has always been one neighbor from hell. In our first home, the couple next door were total slobs - rarely mowed their yard or took care of their flowerbeds. Next we had an apartment, and the brothers across the breezeway were both raging alcoholics. During the day they were reclusive and would barely speak when we passed by. At night they would come over, completely trashed, and want to party - once when David wasn't home one of them followed me back from the parking area and started coming on to me! Nice.... then, we moved to Tulsa and bought a little house while Dave was in medical school. The single mom next door had a teenage son who would spend half the night sitting in the driveway with his friends, throwing empty beer bottles against their garage doors. Next, we moved to San Antonio. The family next door was nice enough, except for their bully daughter from hell (age 3, mind you!) who would terrorize Phoebe (who was a toddler at that time) any chance she got. The girl's parents thought it was cute.

The worst of the worst was our next house; the one we moved out of last December. The next door neighbors consisted of a mom, her worthless grown son, his worthless sleazy girlfriend, and various in-laws, distant cousins and unidentifiable others who seemed to come and go. There was another son who was in prison for most of the time we lived there. He got out and his ex-wife and her two kids stayed in the house for a while. The ex had a restraining order against him, and I was scared to death he would show up next door and do violence. Police cars in front of their place at night was a common occurence. The other son would steal anything he thought he could get away with; his girlfriend would regularly come over asking for money or to use the phone. She'd had 3 kids by the time she was 21 and had a 4th after we moved. Child Protective Services removed 3 of them. She and the son would buy drugs at the curb in front of their place, right in front of my kids and I as we sat on our front porch. The kids would buy $800 cars at the local auction and leave them at the curb (usally right in front of OUR house!) when they stopped running or when they ran out of gas money. The mom and son would steal water from our outdoor spigot for their flowerbeds whenever they thought they woudn't get caught. After a year of living there I knew it was time for us to go. We needed a bigger house, anyway!

I guess no matter where you live, there's always going to be someone who gives you grief. Joe's right - call the police if you need to, though when you do that there's the risk of making them angry at you and THEN what do you do?

So far, Lisa wins!

Our neighborhood is fantastic, with a diverse group of folks, from retirees who have lived here for 50+ years to young couples/families like us. We have two problem neighbors. One is the house across the street which was bought by a nice enough guy, but then his job transferred him out of state, so it became a rental for a single mom with band-member friends who came over to practice all the time. Some drug use going on there too. They vacated the place in early summer when it was put up for sale, and remains unsold and vacant to this day. The house is cute from the outside, but trashed inside and needs major renovations to make it properly "livable." The other house is a couple doors down from me the other way (I live on a corner), and they have WAY too many vehicles, the man's brother works on cars in the garage/alley for a living (no permit of course), they have dogs that breed like rabbits and bark all the time, and occasionally get drunk and blare Oldies (!) music at full volume all night.

Lisa, if I was you and caught my neighbors using my spigot to water their plants, I would apply Round-Up to all the plants I see them watering with my water! I put up with a lot, but the ex-cop in me draws the line somewhere and that better not be crossed!

David, it's neighbors like the ones we left that make me appreciate the nice ones - any everyone else who lived around us was wonderful. It was therapeutic to share horror stories about "The Adams Family." We got lots of sympathy for being in the unfortunate position of being right next door. I remember at closing when we bought our house the seller shook our hands, wished us well, and THEN said, "Watch out for the family to the west of you." Thanks a lot!

I live in South London & it is notorious for being rough.

I live in a victorian house that has been converted into four flats (apartments), I've lived here since getting married in 2002. During that time I've twice been assaulted by the neighbour that lives next door, been slandered by the neighbour downstairs & took the other neighbour to court (I won).

In that time the area has suffered in crime. I've personally had a brick through my car windscreen & all tyres slashed more than once on my car.

As neigbours we have (collectively) had two arson attacks on the property (very scary) had drug dealers outside, prostitutes soliciting for business and rubbish fly tipped. Only in June a car was set on fire outside. The heat was so great the lampost has bowed from the heat.

On top of that, a government building has been sold to an immigration company who houses immigrants. Many times I have caught non English speaking people urinating & defacating in the garden.

Previous to getting married I lived in a wonderful flat where all the neighbours knew each other & used to have barbecues in the summer. We used to go to each others to watch movies together or eat & have a glass or two. If anyone was going to make noise, a note would be posted through the letterbox to let the others know the time & date.

Man, I miss living there.......

Good neighbours are a blessing.

Keep your chin up & stay sane in the knowledge you won't be there forever.

You will move on & are wiser, so know what to look for in a potential home.

YES!!! Finally a place to vent...

I lived across the street from this idiot who would go out in front of his house at 5-6AM every morning in his bare feet and prance around his yard playing a flute.

I can not even fathom how someone would think this is ok in a small neighborhood with houses 30 feet away.

I finally had to move my family.

Thank you for the vent. I have resumed staring at my watch and I feel better now.

I'm sorry to laugh, but if I had a neighbour who only did that, I would count my blessings.

Truth is stranger than fiction!

Point well taken about learning from experience... when deciding on our current home, several times I actually drove over at night and walked up and down the street, nothing how many cars regularly parked in the streets, whether there were barking dogs, whether the houses nearby were relatively quiet. Often, when a realtor is showing a home in the middle of the day, neighbors are at work and things are deceptively calm and quiet.

Our neighbors now are lovely, interesting and educated people. We are happy here, finally. Houses cost more, and there's odd/nutty people at every economic level, but we're lucky this time, so far. That said, the sweet 87 year old woman next door has just been put into a long-term care facility. It's unknown whether the house will be sold or whether her son will move in. This is almost funny it's so ironic - but the son has kind of given me the creeps the few times I've been around him. He's a retired teacher, never married, and seems just a little bit too attentive to my girls and me. Hard to really describe, but something just doesn't seem quite right. So of course, who wants to lay odds he'll be our newest neighbor from hell!

Don't worry. This mama bear errs on the side of being too cautious. The girls will NEVER be alone with him for a second.

Our subdivision has 83 homes and is on 250 acres. Yes, I drove around the neighborhood and counted the homes. Took a shot of beer each time I counted a home.

Reason for post.....police were called out for a small domestic dispute and noticed a strange smell coming from the woods. Lo' and behold, about 250 yards from our back fence was a Meth Lab. Just goes to show. No, it was not my Meth Lab.

Yup, and during one of my many conversations with the narcotics detective about our neighbors, the detective told me about a guy living in the city's most expensive neighborhood - multimillion dollar homes - who ran a huge drug ring and did a lot of selling out of his home. Crazy.

Well I don't know why I came here tonight,
I got the feeling that something ain't right,
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you.

Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you,
And I'm wondering what it is I should do,
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, yeah, I'm all over the place,
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Well you started out with nothing,
And you're proud that you're a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
Please.... Please.....

Trying to make some sense of it all,
But I can see that it makes no sense at all,
Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor,
'Cause I don't think that I can take anymore
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

I rent my house. I am on my third tenant.

Tenant #1: Asked to have a dog. I love dogs so I said okay. She got 7 dogs. Big ones too. They did damage and she did not pay to fix it.

Tenant #2: Had the natural gas line disconnected and hooked up their own gas tank. The gas company saw this and remove the illegal gear and capped the line. The tenants moved out because it got cold and they could not heat the house. Before they left they dold my refrigerator because they said it did not get cold enough.

Tenant #3: Living there now.
