New Cell phone . . . what to get ?
Well, my phone contract with Verizon is up in about a week or so, and I need a new phone. I currently have a Razr and, the first year it was a GREAT phone. Now, it the screen blanks out almost all the time (making text messaging impossible), the front screen blanks out as well, and constantly drops calls. So, I was thinking of getting a PDA for my next phone. I went to the Verizon store, and to my surprise, they do not carry the Treo 800W yet (every other provider has it, but Verizon does not). So, I narrowed it down to the new Motorola Q 9C, or the Treo Centro. I personally think the Centro is way too small (especially the keyboard), however, the Q does NOT have a touch screen (something I like). The only other option I would have (as far as a Treo from them would be the 700WX, which they want . . . . GHASP $300 for !!!! Another option verizon had is (what looks like the Mongol) has a touch screen, and a keyboard that slides out. I LOVE that phone, but it also costs $419 !! So, help me people, which would you choose ? Or, would you go as far as changing providers for another phone ?

I'm happy with my 16gb iPhone - sleek design and well thought-out software. I had a bunch of HTC windows mobile phones before and imo the iPhone is in a league of its own.

I had an iphone and it was fantastic, but it didn't pick up very well in my house. I am trying out a 100 buck Blackjack II and it's OK. Reception is good, but nothing touches the iphone OS and browser.

Go for a BlackBerry. Total workhorse. Try a Pearl, Curve or 8800.

It is reputed to be the iPhone slayer

Verizon does not have the Iphone.
I had the Q when it first came out... did not like it. I had the samsung that flipped open two ways with a FULL QWERTY keyboard, best phone for texting. I now have the DARE; touch screen, 3.2 MP camera, full QWERTY keyboard, etc... I like it alot, texting takes a while to get used to with the touchscreen but i'm good at it now. Overall, if you do not need the accessories of the PDA; i wouldnt suggest them. They are slow in processing the little things that a phone consist of. Just my opinion. Mike |

Thanks for the comments so far ! The I-Phone I cannot get through my provider (Verizon) though :( The LG Dare does look good. My boss just got a Blackberry Curve, and hates it. He said it shuts down by itself, constantly looses calls, etc. I REALLY want a Treo product, but am not willing to pay the $299 Verizon wants for a device that's going on 3 years old (the 700WX). The Centro's keypad is too small, I think I may end up just getting the Q 9C. I bought the first black "q" when they first came out, and it was terrible (battery would not charge, software issues, etc.) I hope they improved with this new 9C.

I have my eye on the AT&T Bold. I read rumors about the Javelin, which has a better form factor (similar size as the Curve). AT&T is set to release the Bold on 11/4.
Anyone have a Rogers or unlocked Bold? If so, please share your review.

I had a TREO 650 a while back. I hated it; to heavy, slow, and the battery just sucks on those PDAs.
Again, if you do not need all the extra software, I would stick with a smart phone. |

HTC Mongol??? Hahahahahaha... I believe that would be the Mogul. I have the Verizon XV6800 which is the very one you refer to (or tried to). If you want a WM (Windows Mobile) phone, they include a touch screen (some, not all) and there are a few choices available from Verizon. The HTC Touch is another or the Samsung i760. These phones do a lot and there's a ton of software out there for them but... they can be a little tempermental. The Palm OS is reputed to be more stable. I love my phone but I've spend a fair amount of time doing registry tweaks, 3rd party software, utilities, etc. If you're a tech-savvy, mod-happy type person, a WM phone is fine. If you're not so inclined, look at some of the other dedicated OS's from Palm, Samsung, etc. Or.... wait 6 months and something better will present itself. Good luck!!

lol, yes I was referring to the Verizon XV6800 (I couldn't remember what Verizon called it lol). My GF's father has one (he's had it for almost a year) and he doesn't like it because he can't use it overseas (he travels to England, China, etc. a lot on business). Other then that, he loves the phone. I like how the keyboard slides out, has a touch screen, is Windows based, etc. But do NOT like the price Verizon wants for it (even with the 2 year contract it's $419 with a $79 mail in rebate). I think I'll wait it out, and hope that Verizon carries the 800W by the 9th lol

Hmmm... I got mine for $250 w/incentives (new every 2, etc.). The most impressiive thing when showing off the phone is I can convert and download entire movies onto it. I got an 8GB Micro SDHC and have got around 12 movies on it w/2.5GB left over. Plugged in to a computer (or other) stereo system, this thing never fails to bring a grin. Incredibly sharp little picture, huge sound. I have a lot of fun w/mine. Then again, I've spent a fair amount of bux on extra software for it.
Windows Mobile isn't "finger-friendly" as supplied. With the correct tweaks and/or software, you can go a long ways towards making it much more 'iphone'-like. Things like photo-contacts, finger scrolling/page flipping, etc. are all possible on the XV6800. Too bad they're asking so much for it. As an alternative, you may want to look at the LG Dare. No hardware keyboard but... supposed to have a lot of 'i-phone' similarities.

Actually, come to think of it, if you renew your contract, I beleive Verizon gives you $100 towards your next phone. So, if the original cost of the XV is $419, with a $70 (I think) mail in rebate, plus the $100 off, I'm looking at about $249. Heck, for that price, I think I'll go for it ! I'll let you know on the 9th what I went with :) |

Sound great, Mike. PM me if you end up getting it because there are a couple things you'll want to do immediately. Get it to accept cards larger than 2GB is one. Upping the volume is another tweak you'll want to do. Happy shopping...

I have an iPhone 16gb 3G, recently upgraded from the 8gb 2G
My brother has both an Iphone 2G and a Blackberry. BB was issued to him by his employer. For personal use, the Iphone is his pick. For work, the Blackberry is his pick as it has loud speakerphone that can be set in the middle of a table and used for a conference call, has a loud audible ring that can be heard if he leaves it on his desk and goes to another room. I like the iphone for internet access, mp3 use and playback movies while sitting in an airplane. Each has its strengths. Pick that one that meets your needs. |
