Hong Kong is "Rolex Paradise"

I have been to a lot a places on the face of this earth.

But Hong Kong takes top spot for ROLEX, there are so many AD's, sometimes two across the road from each other so you don't have to cross the street!
(Not to mention the Casinos in Macau each casino has multiple AD's)

I have been in heaven for 10 days, every 8th - 9th person wears ROLEX!

It's a luxury to them and they want it, because they can't afford to own housing or cars!

AD's have no S/S stock, only grey markets flourish!

Following Pix are from one dealer, one of many shops, offering what you wish!!

Prices are high, and AD's are offering generous payment plans, on credit!

NO REPLICA'S AROUND HERE! (they are dealt like drugs under the counter)

Confusing? Cant afford a car or house but wears a Rolex. If this happened in North America you would be ridiculed.

So what is it in HK? is Rolex a 'luxury' item or is it like Levis Jeans??

That is what you get when you wear a Rolex. When standing in line at the grocery store you can see the exact same watch you are wearing on the next guy.

Agreed. Go to any half decent vacation resort and everyone is wearing a Rolex.

I must say I cannot understand the mentality where if someone else has the same watch I do then I no longer like my watch. Why would you think this?

housing is 10x more expensive than your neck of the woods. half the people are in public housing of some sort.

Parking is scarce, gas is $8/gallon, and the cars themselves are pricier than in the US. maybe 5% of people own a car... median salary here is less than $2000 per month, with Many earning less than $1500.

on the other hand, some people own many cars and residences. the wealth disparity is extreme.

Most human behavior in HK would be ridiculed in North America

They sure as hell couldn't leave them out like that here in the states. The snatch and grab crowd would swarm the place.

Pretty sure there is glass and a lock between window shoppers and the several million dollars of Rolexes. Not that I've been to Hong Kong...

Middle class flats trade for around USD2k per square foot - so the entry point is around 1m. To buy the equivalent of a “nice” Miami apartment would cost USD4-12m.

In that context, Rolexes are relatively affordable

Those are second hand and grey dealers.

In the ADs, it’s the same festival of TT DJs and PM models you find in the UK

APs are pretty common here too (bearing in mind that almost as many APs get sold here each year as in the entire US) - for example, last time I was at the playground, among around 25 parents, about half the parents were wearing the usual Apple watches / garmins, then there were a slew of Rolexes and two people with AP RG ROO44s

My cousin from Australia (Chinese mix Aussie), just had this very same question towards my cousin from Hongkong ( Chinese born and raised in the UK but currently working in Hongkong). My HongKong cousin cant seem to answer my Aussie cousin in a convincing way which i step into the discussion:

Can't afford a car or house is quite common in HongKong or even Macau, because IT IS SINFULLY FREAKING EXPENSIVE. one would have to trade his kidney to own a 700sq/ft house in HONGKONG. But ask any CHINESE or Asians in South East Asia.....to show success/rich is to own a Rolex/Merc...

It is not surprising to see a waiter/taxi-drive/butcher/taylor or even cashier wearing a Rolex. Why i ask?? then i found out that IF one is left with nothing, one still can get instant cash from the pawn shop with a Rolex (depending on which model). Hence, people in Chinese territory usually have a saying "buy and keep a ROLEX for rainy days".

i hope you get the picture.
