Safer Money?
D-Blue or SD50, assuming kept stickers on and in the safe. I'm sure I have the willpower to not wear either, just wondering. Is there another watch that would be better to do this with?

Open a Fidelity account and invest in FUSVX. You are likely to get a much better return on your money. Generally speaking, watches are not good investments. Rolexes hold value, but the vast majority will not make you as much money over time as will the stock market.

Depends on how you buy them. Pay full price plus tax and it's going to be a while on either before you'll make money on them. If I had to gamble on one or the other, I'd go Cameron.

I’d say James Cameron for the future, but I’d wear it as it’s a beautiful piece.
I’ve just bought one and worn it a few times...why not, enjoy it and it will still keep great money. |

Why these two?
They are still in production and their size doesn't have universal appeal.. The SD50 would be a fast riser if this is the only run with red lettering, but there is no evidence of that.. |

I'd go D-Blue also but wouldn't rule out a Sub LVc either, assuming you could find one at retail (ha, ha).

A friend of mine has come into some money and doesn't want to tie it up for years or take risks. I advised him to buy a SS pre C Daytona, pre C Sub and a pre C GMT. Don't keep them in the safe, the world doesn't need another unworn Rolex. Just buy mint and keep them mint by looking after them.

in this (i hope) hypothetical, my vote would go for the D-Blue, but the big caveat would be if there is any truth to the rumors that the red text on the SD50 is going to be limited to the 50th year anniversary.

Get a red Sub or SD from the 60's. Yeah, it'll cost you but it will also come with a track record of having appreciated over time. Something neither of the two you are considering offer.

Just because you want to buy something that holds its value well, doesn’t mean it has to be considered an “investment”. There are also plenty of people out there who really enjoy buying things and keeping them in brand new condition. Good for them! Do what you enjoy. To the OP, it’s a tough call but for now it looks like the SD43 is relatively easy to get with a little patience and a deposit. If rolex pulls a Crazy move and decides to pull the red line or something, the value will sky rocket on all those with the original anniversary red line. Obviously no one knows if that will happen. On the other hand I have a feeling the D-Blue is starting down the path to retirement. I think it will hold its value well, especially one in brand new condition. I think there’s another Submariner anniversary in 2023, my guess is by then there will be an entirely new line of subs available. Not sure how it would affect the value of all the current steel watches but lately the values have been insane. Who knows!? Lol. |

Why buy any watch and not wear it. Investing in a watch is just silly.

OP a new Daytona (at MSRP), while impossible to get, would almost certainly be your best option. But if I had to personally pick between these two, I'd go with the James Cameron. I don't understand the "watches aren't investments" line that gets broken out so often on TRF. There's a plethora of evidence to show that stainless sport Rolex's appreciate, and since you already have a good portfolio then yeah, why not? I might do the same, though I probably don't have the will power not to wear it... |

Letting a Watch sit in a safe doesn’t sound like much fun. I’d prefer it on my wrist. THAT would be fun. |
