Next watch opinion: 5167 or ....

I currently have in my collection:
  • Rolex Daytona ceramic white dial
  • Rolex Daytona ceramic black dial
  • Rolex GMT Master II BLNR
  • Rolex SeaDweller 4000 SD4K
  • Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
  • Omega Speedmaster CK2998
  • Tudor Black Bay Black ETA version

Curious to hear what PP owners think should be next watch given my SS sport heavy collection. Both are about the same price

Aquanaut 5167

Or the FP Journe Chronometre Bleu

5167 you can’t go wrong with this watch as your first Patek

i find the 5167 rather ordinary and would certainly get the chronometer blue.

I think you should add a different metal to your collection. The FPJ is very nice especially with the tantalum case. I would pick the 5167R over the FPJ, though.

Just be aware that the cost of servicing the FPJ is almost 3 times that of the Aquanaut, which won’t include a full polish… but you will get a new strap!
That said, and as you are heavily sports biased, of the two options, it’d be the more preferable one.

If you’re not averse to looking at pre-owned or other brands which depreciate at typical levels, then you could consider the likes of:

2nd Gen Vacheron Constantin Overseas
Bvlgari Octo (inc. Finissimo and the larger but discontinued Genta branded versions)
Roger Dubuis Excalibur Carbon
and if you fancy something quite a bit different, then the new ceramic Girard Perregaux Laureato.

If you’re thinking of having at least one fairly dressy watch, then don’t overlook the Moser & Cies, although their Pioneer in SS may offer a similar casualness that the 5167 does, if the domed crystal (which makes it a 14-15mm thick watch) isn’t an issue.

If I were you I'd probably consolidate a few of the Rolexes and get both.

The 5167 is an excellent, under the radar, daily watch. Classy and elegant enough for a suit, and also great for casual wear too. Same could be said with the FPJ, except that you also have the opportunity to swap straps and change up the look.

Even though I'm getting the FPJ CB, I would prioritize the 5167 first.

Also, consider that 5167 can be a slippery slope... it didn't take me very long before I lusted for a 5164, and it seems like there are plenty of 5167 owners around these parts who eventually made the upgrade too.

It seems you, like me, prefer sports watches. I’d get the 5167. If I’m misreading you then by all means the CB is a great piece. You have two winners lined up.

Both are great pieces. I really love The CB. You will like the Aqua but my guess is You will want more like the 5164 very soon

I would go for the Aquanaut first. The CB is a beautiful watch, but the Aquanaut is so comfortable and versatile.

Get the 5167 first. Then after a few months you will realize that you won´t be wearing the majority of your other SS sports watches anymore.

By flipping a few of those you can then fund the CB. Job done.

Agree with the above - consolidate your existing collection and you can add both.

As to the individual pieces, not a fan of the CB. Clearly it's a great blue, and the back is fantastic, but it's such a conservative watch. When I think of Journe, I think of extreme asymmetrical designs and those extreme bug eye looking subdials. For Journe, I'd go with a piece more out there, and for something more traditional, I'd lean ALS.

The 5167 is not a perfect watch either, but I love mine, and it slots nicely into your collection. If possible, stretching for a 5712 would be the way to go.

I like both. Beware though, after owning the PP or FJ, it may be really hard to go back to Rolex even though they are great watches. I suspect you may end up selling off some of your current (very nice) collection.

+1 to this. After I got my 5167, the Rolexes, save for the Hulk, which I bought after the 5167 got zero wrist time at all.

I basically started wearing my 5167 in every situation where I would have worn a Rolex, except diving. I anticipate that my 5164 will be used much the same.

Leaning towards 5167. But yikes! I haven't even gotten a 5167 and the seed has already been planted for the 5164

I do like sports watches because I typically don't wear a suit to work and I'm active

I've never tried on PP Aquanaut so I don't know how comfortable it is first hand; however, based on everything i have read and heard it is a unbelievably comfortable timepiece

hahahaha ..... i think there might need to be some consolidation in the near future.

I actually don't wear my Omegas and Tudor much at all.... so those would be the first to go... however the $ probably would not be that significant

For some reason not a huge fan of AP15202 or PP5711 because of the integrated bracelet

very interesting... zero Rolex wrist time huh?

I can't envision a time where I wouldn't wear my white Daytona or SD4K ---- i love those two watches

5167 is a nice watch. Had a 5167 Steel Bracelet but just traded it, and kind of regret not keeping it and getting the rubber strap/clasp. Would love to see a 5168 in person.

You and I have a very similar collection. I would go the 5167 route in your option set. Though, I would say from experience 5164 is a pretty cool piece too. Rubber is great.

Clearly the 5167 fits the rest of your collection. But this is one of those dull uninspiring watches, of which there are hundreds out there from every brand. Do you really want that?

5164, light years ahead. More interesting dial, case.

The FPJ is a different animal. Would be very different from your other watches and so you should be sure it would be something you would like and wear. Despite my comment about the 5167 it would seem based on your existing collection you would wear that watch.

You're in NYC so I assume you have handled both. Have you?

I just got the 5167 in stainless and bought the rubber strap. I love it but agree the 5164 gets real interesting once you get the 5167. Dumb question but do people wear the black rubber with brown belt and shoes? I have a BLNR that I rotate have only had the 5167 a week but it’s great.

I think a 5164 is a natural progression with the 5167. I definitely would not have taken the plunge directly into a 5164 having never owned a Patek before. As I became more comfortable with the 5167, an upgrade to a 5164 seemed like a logical choice. As my incoming thread noted, the 5164 corrects almost all of the minor quibbles I had about the 5167, features that I wouldn't have appreciated without having had the 5167 first.

That said, if you've been a Rolex guy for the most part, the proportions of the 5167 are going to feel weird, as it's such a thin watch. The 5164 is a bit meatier with more presence, and perfectly proportioned for a sports watch.

But the 5164 is just another level in terms of $ that i'm not sure ready for yet
5164 is awesome looking though

if i go with 5167, i'm debating between rubber or steel (and then buy rubber strap)

yeah not sure. i'm a sports/activity kind of guy so not sure how FPJ would fit into lifestyle. Clearly it would be special occasion type watch

I have handled both

CB at the FPJ boutique. Someone had a CB with tan/orange strap. I tried is on and it did look good.

I also had opportunity to "touch" the 5167 with steel bracelet. AD wouldn't open it from sealed package unless i was serious. At that point (4-5 months ago), PP was not something i really considered although i really liked, i just wasn't over that hump yet....so l let it go

As an owner of both a 5167 (rubber) + a 5168, without hesitation I would go for a 5168. It's legibility is off the charts!

I almost feel like i need to "start" with 5167 first. The jump to 5164 from 5167 is pretty steep in terms of price.

Thank you the assessment on if i'm used to Rolex then i'd be more used to 5164. That is good insight!
