Discontinued Patek Models for 2018

Gents,
Just seen the tweet that the following models will be discontinued by Patek:
So what will and won't go up in value now that they are no longer in production?

cheers

I politely disagree...5960, 5205, and 5170 in particular are readily available in pretty much any US AD and the 5940 never really performed well. I am looking forward to seeing a new manual wind chrono in the future.

The 5960a black dial is the rarest of the bunch

In time I think the 5960a, especially with the black dial, will be very collectible, particularly if there isn’t a replacement any time soon. I can’t think of a steel chrono (except 5950) or AC that wasn’t a nautilus in Pateks recent history. I think that makes it pretty special.

But 5960 black dial is very hard to read in real life. I had the opportunity to buy one and I passed by thinking of their performance in second hand market 🤬

Current value in secondary market not necessarily reflective of the future. I don’t think it’s value will shoot up overnight, I’m thinking medium to longer term.

I don’t think the chrono and annual calendar combination has done well for Patek and must likely that won’t change .

Shame to see the 5270r go, but was expected.

I agree, the 5205g esp will still struggle I fear.

I am inclined to agree with you; production of both dials was rather limited and this is a fairly complicated piece, offered in steel with a fairly unique case, dial and bracelet from Patek Philippe. Their value on the secondary market is rather depressed at present, in the context of the overall market. Discounts at ADs will move close to zero I imagine and once sold, expanded demand will perhaps lead to higher prices.

I am not sure what to think about the 5205G's discontinuation; when combined with some of the other discontinued pieces, I initially thought that there was a new annual calendar in the making, replacing these pieces, but they have retained some of the range, such as the R variants...

I remember when this was first released, Thierry had such high expectations for this one. Problem was legibility was really poor.

Is there a typical result to models which are discontinued? For example, price goes up, goes down, etc?

Guess this means the 5270P will make an appearance this year.

Does this generally mean it may be time to maybe pick up a 5170 or the 5960 before they are discontinued? Is there potentially an opportunity to make a better deal? Or will supply be tighter causing the prices to naturally rise, hence no deal?

And maybe a 5270J? Haven't seen that yet, either.

Indeed, the concave case and art deco vibe was interesting and the piano black dial against the RG was gorgeous but after a wave of initial interest here, even the RG has faded somewhat, and the other ACs, esp with Breguets seem more en vogue.

I much prefer this as a RG, what are you thoughts Steve, going to get the scissors or awaiting the P?

It's not my style but it is kind of iconic looking now, so I think it should be safe.

Not sure getting rid of the 5170r is a great idea with Lange just releasing the 1815 chrono in RG, seem to be paving the way for them here instead of a price cut and fighting them. Just feels like they are giving up a lot of this middle ground between sports and grand comps to them.

Agree, R over J on this one, although I wonder if they will even bother with a J or just phase out the 5270 line altogether after the P sans diamonds (assuming that's released). As for the P, I am curious what they will do with it. Black dial? Blue dial? Something even more special? So, the scissors still are collecting dust, until at least after Basel. Then decision time on what to do with it.

I love your R, but probably best to see out Basel. Hope the P is with green dial so you get that R out to play, but what if it's salmon?

Looking at the list properly that is actually quite a few models, so maybe there will be a rerouting more towards the popular sports as well, maybe the skewed market is having an affect.
