5990, any downsides?

Hello all,

My Rolex AD, who also sells PP, just got in a 5990 and offered it to me today. I have been on the waitlist for the 5711 blue for a little over a year and he "implied" that snagging this would push me up the list.

I have tried the watch on and like the look and feel of it - but not sure if it is a definite keeper. I'm also having trouble gauging a fair price to pay to somewhat protect myself in case it doesn't stick around forever (I'm getting 2% off for check instead of CC).

Has anyone here bought one and decided it wasn't for them? What was your reason?

From my basic knowledge and understanding of PP, I know 11/12 are the most popular SS nautilus models, how is the 5990 relatively speaking?

5990, any downsides?

Downsides above it not being the watch you’re after?

That AD ‘strategy’ is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Even if ‘moving up the list’ meant I’d get a 5711 tomorrow.

So your 5711 will essentially cost ~ 3.5x more....

BUT — if you want it — get it!!!

Just my .02

Good luck!!

Unless you A) want it or B) he can give you a concrete delivery window on the 5711 I would pass. That said, don't expect a 5711 soon if you do lol these are the games being played. At least your AD is offering steel watches!

PS: I TOO like tacos

Downside is if they come out with a blue dial SS version at Basel this year. Otherwise, the downside should be limited, especially if this piece gets the price hike that's likely coming soon. Try to squeeze an additional 5% discount if you can. My guess is if you pass, it won't be around for too long. All assuming you like it.

I’d at least wait until after Basel. You never know what may change your mind.

It’s a great watch. The only downside is if you use the chrono then you’re limited to 60 minutes only.

Wearing mine now - it is a beautiful watch with amazing depth and detail - pictures truly do not do it justice. Having owned a 5711 SS I’d take this over it all day long. But, no harm in waiting until after Basel - though should anything exciting debut there I’m not sure you’d have any better chance at that. And if ultimately any of these are what you truly want and are keepers, I wouldn’t sweat a few bucks either way. But that’s just one man’s opinion lol. Good luck!

I am warming to the watch, only bugbears I have are the Patek logo on the bottom of the dial and the Local text being bigger than the Patek text.

I agree with my AD when he told me all the Nautilus are extremely popular.

Go with the 5990, TS!

I love the 5990. Have not laid eyes on one in person and also thought they could have skipped the HOME/LOCAL all together, but that's very minimal. I say go for it.

Of the 19 listed in the US on Chrono24, they're all asking above MSRP for what it's worth.

Yup, I'm glad I'm not the only one that is bothered by this (especially the Patek Philippe text being on the bottom half.) I thought I was being crazy, so never have expressed any thoughts on the 5990 on this board.

Just got mine a couple of days ago. So far no downsides its a really comfortable watch, I imagined it to be top heavy but in reality it is really balanced. I find the complications to be useful for everyday wear.

Since getting the 5164 the large text issue is more evident and all rather unnecessary. That said, I think I could get over them if I really wanted the rest of the watch.

The 5990 is a nice piece but I’d pass on that deal. I’m also not one to get put on a list, so likely I wouldn’t be in this position. If I am going to get a 5711, I’m going to wait for a 5711P!

The one minor criticism i would point out is the fact that sometimes the pushers on the left hand side is accidentally pressed during the day and the watch will display the wrong time.

I’d rather have a 5990 than a 5711.
If your AD will guarantee a 5711 if your buying the 5990 do it immediately.

was a concern of mine too especially the Home, Local text size vs the PP text size. In person its not an issue to me as its way less noticeable than in pics. That was really the only issue i had with it, but that has passed.

Its sort of like the Rolex dials, and I hate all the text. Its like they just printed all watch's credentials right on the dial. In pics its very busy but you dont really notice it when wearing it.

That was my experience too when I had one...drove me crazy so I moved it on.

Loved the watch otherwise but couldn’t get past this issue.

How could that be? Are the pushers that easy? You must be doing pushups with it on

It's interesting that Patek sports and AP don't give the name of even the model on the dial, but always telling us of Geneve and Swiss.

the ones on mine were...bit too old for push ups now

in reality I think they just caught on the cuffs of my double cuff shirts.

like I said it’s a great watch but a lot to have tied up if you don’t love it.

here’s a piccy if mine from back then...

I used to have a 5990 but sold it. Great watch, useful complications but just didn’t ‘click’ 100% for me. The travel time function is awesome, however I wish the minutes for the chrono were jumping and not the gradual sweep.

Got a 5712 and for me personally I’m wearing and enjoying it a lot more. I have slim wrists and just find the thinness of the 5712 more convenient for wearing more often.
