SS Daytona Deposit

Is it customary to put down a deposit to get on al list for a SS Daytona?

AD asked for $4,000.

Did they say it would bring you up the list? I would consider it if it meant I would get the watch in a confirmed one period and it was refundable after a predetermined wait time

I think it's a good way to show you are serious and get up the list faster, I would need a written time limit for a refund tho.

For hard to get watches deposits are sometimes required. I asked to be put on the list for a hulk at a Fl. AD and they asked for a 20% deposit. No delivery date given, I passed and got one from my local AD two weeks later.

I don't see the ridicule of deposits here. As long as it's refundable (which is frequently regulated by state laws) I think it separates the buyers from the tire kickers.
The Boutique in my town has "lists" for pieces that are in demand and don't usually make it or last in the case long. Those are informal, they get one in and then start calling down the list until someone bites immediately.
For HIGH demand pieces (and I think it's only DaytonaC's and SS Skydwellers) it's a deposit to get in line, and the Daytona one is closed until they knock it down some. Of course they are refundable but I don't think anyone can give you a firm window for delivery, at least until you're almost first in line.

They said I would be number 9 in line.

They also said that they have calls to be put on the list every day a deposit is the only way to regulate who makes the list.

Make sure they give you a delivery date. I'd assume they have a date because no one should be tying up $4000 for an infinite period of time. For $4000 deposit, I'd expect them to have the watch within 2 months.

If you can, lock in a price. If there's a price increase it won't affect you. For $4000 you should demand it.

I got my ceramic SS white Daytona only 2-3 months after Basel release. I was the first one the AD received. How? I paid in full the day it was announced at Basel and never looked back. Money talks, and sometimes you have to put some down to get what you want.

At least your name is on the list now. Really wish Montreal AD could make the list same way.
I went back to China last year and visited several ADs in Shanghai. One of them said I could get a Daytona C in six months if I put a deposit(full retail price) but I didn't. Now I regretted.

I had $2000 down in a hulk and they delivered
I now have $1000 down on a daytona white dial and I’m waiting!
I hear different responses from ADs. Some say “it’s wrong for us to keep your money, we will call you when the watch arrives” and of course I believe a word they’re saying

And few will take a deposit but at least that binds them to some commitment imho.
I can’t think of an AD ruining their reputation over $1000

Make the deposit. Shows your serious. I laugh at people who want on the 'list' w/o a deposit

I have $1,000 (x 2) deposit which is refundable at my AD for the Daytona (Wht dial) and Sky-D (black dial) .. As long as the deposit is refundable I don't see a problem.

exactly

A grand is cheap. Serious buyers should be willing to pony up 50%. Would eliminate 'flippers' using their 'credit line'.

Deposits are not for me, but if you go to the top of the list, do it. Make sure it's refundable.

I also agree, however some ADs aren't even taking anymore deposits as it's not fair (their words) to hold people's money without an exact date of arrival for the pieces. I was told this today about the Sky-D and Daytona from multiple ADs... So it's just a waiting game now and $2,000 (edited post) is not that big of a deal.

Good luck to all who are in the same boat hopefully there will be more incomings this year !

If 2 or 4k puts you in a bind, it's not for you. I'd consider doing 2 or 4. Not half though. Best of luck.

I paid $2,500 in March 2016. It took 572 days to deliver my white dial 116500

My issue is that I am not sure I want that watch. I wouldn’t mind getting on a list where I could be inline should l decide I wanted the watch in the future. Had I needed to put a deposit down for my SkyDweller I would have done this because I knew I wanted one.

If this was my holy grail I would go ahead and put down full price to jump to the head of the line.

I'd do it if you really want the piece. However, deposits can be a sticky area to deal with as I see them as a way for ADs to tie up lots of your money without having to actually deliver to you - it doesn't mean a VIP won't cut you in line. I have done them where the AD or boutique was able to give me a ETA.

Strangely, I've offered deposits and even to pay in full for some hard to get references (e.g. the PP 5712/1A) and not a single AD in North America was willing to entertain my request.

If you are going to put money down, get a contract in writing of what you should expect. For me that should include a timeframe of when they are going to deliver. Otherwise get your money back. If your name is just on a list like 50 other guys then you might be expected to be dicked around, but if you put down $4,000 you should have expectations to get something for that money. After all the AD is going to cash your check and spend it.

Unfortunately ADs consider it a favor to take our money and some of us are “desperate “ enough to not upset them!!
Providing a timeframe is almost impossible as their answer is always “we don’t know when the next one will be but you’re the second (or first or whatever) on our list”
I agree about clarifying that deposit is 100% refundable and not store credit!!
That’s what I insisted on both times and had it in writing

I totally agree! Money talks and BS walks. I always put money down and have paid in full in some instances to be first

Put a deposit down If you get it and don't love it, sell it. Period. Make some money and move on to something better in your eyes.

Agree you can still get dicked around even with a deposit, but if you have something in writing that if you don't have your watch in 12 months (for example) they will return the money. Come 12 months from now it will be painful for them to write a $4,000 check and maybe a watch will appear. Otherwise not worth it to pay to be dicked around. You can get that for free.

I did not need to put a deposit down on my DaytonaC and I received in about 3.5 months.

Wouldn't hesitate to do a deposit with a promised date/ETA like others have said....but don't do it without one.....you're asking for trouble.....I'm going through it right now (albeit not with Rolex).

My AD requires a $2K deposit for Daytonas for the top 5 people on the list. So once you move up the list to the #5 position you get a call to make a deposit. I think it's done this way to keep people honest but not to hold customers money for too long ... they figure they can deliver the watches to those 5 people within a reasonable amount of time.
