Sub Date 2012 serviced or 2014 mint?

Hello.

I’m very new here so I apologise in advance for any daft questions I might ask. With that said here’s my first:

I’m looking to buy a Submariner Date with the intention of it being the watch that’ll be with me forever.

My only wish is that it comes with the glide lock bracelet (everything I’ve read seems to suggest they’re really very nice), so which year doesn’t bother me so much as the condition.

I’m looking at a few and have seen one that’s from 2012 but was serviced by Rolex December last year (comes with official service receipt so is guaranteed until dec 2019 I believe),
The other/s are 2014/15 and appear to all be in ‘mint’ condition.

What I would like your advice on is whether you’d go for the recently officially serviced or the newer watch?

Also, are the guarantees transferable or only applicable for the person named on the guarantee?

Photos of the watches might help.
I would just buy the watch that was newer in this situation.
A watch that has been serviced may have had the case polished and it may have polished out a bad ding and taken a bit of steel off the case?

Hello,

I’m looking at Submariners and am hoping for advice about whether you’d get a 2012 that’s just been serviced by Rolex, or whether to get a 2015 that’s in ‘mint’ condition..

Even though the first is 3 years older does the recent service make it better value?

The 2012 service Sub will have a 2 year warranty only. I’d go for the latter ones as per post above.

But wouldn’t the 2014’s guarantee run out at the same time? Then it’s nearing a service whereas the 2012 was only serviced 2 years before?

Any Rolex sold with a green chronometer tag will have the 5 year warranty (I believe this started after July 2015 or so). This will have you covered until 2020.

Ok, I’ve read there are issues with transferring warrants but I guess that’d be the same with the service warranty too.

I would go with the newer watch. The warranty follows the watch and not the owner.

You say you plan to have this watch forever. In that case, why not buy new from an AD? Looking at the prices on chrono24 for sub dates from around that time, most of the prices are only a few hundred less than retail. For a watch that’s going to be with you for your lifetime, that’s not worth it in my opinion. Save a little more and buy new.

A 2012 sub serviced by Rolex in 2017 and then sold...would make me think why the previous owner serviced it...

As stated in a previous reply, go for a new one.
