Scratches and dings = stories

I was strapping my favorite watch - my SD4k - on my wrist this morning, and a little ding on the side of the case caught my eye.

I had forgotten about it, as it’s been there for a long time, and it actually brought a smile to my face. Got me thinking of all the places I have traveled, things I have accomplished, and fun I have had while wearing this watch.

I banged into a doorframe on the night I proposed to my wife, because I was nervous, which led to that little ding. Great memory of that night!

What stories does your watch tell?

My watch tells the story of being given to me by my wife the night before our wedding, and all of the great times, and hard times we face as husband and wife as we walk through life together.

Mine isn't quite so romantic: a seatbelt flying from right to left after I unlatched it smacked into the right lug of my Sub. It's barely visible but I notice it.

I never realized how many times a day I bump my wrist into things until I got my first Rolex.

What if I just banged it against a stucco wall on my way to work one morning and nothing really eventful happened that day?

Nice post. I don’t share the same sentiment exactly. My LVC is developing a nice “patina?”. After 3+ years of regular use the scratches and swirls just generally remind me that I’ve enjoyed the watch.

I had a panerai that slipped out of my hands when I was cleaning it over the kitchen sink. A fork put a nasty ding in it. There was no romance there. I never looked back at that memory and thought, that day the dirty fork in my sink puncture my panerai was an amazing day. Basically it sucked lol.

I know it took me ages to get emulsion paint out from around the bezel after painting the living room. Mine is collecting all sorts of lumps and bumps, mainly because ive started working in to.

Ha that’s the worst, some of mine have scars from mistakes I have made. Whoops.

Not all of the stories have to be memorable, but I personally enjoy seeing folks live in their watches, and for stuff to happen while wearing them...meaningful and mundane.

THIS. It happens with my bigger watches more than say, explorer or Daytona, but I definitely notice it.

Ouch. All part of wearing the hell out of it tho!

Love it, that’s what I am saying. Good to have memories attached to them, and not have them simply be tools (or worse, mere jewelry).

What Tim said, yep, that’s my plan. Rikki polished a sizeable scratch out of my 14060m at service a few years ago, and I kind of miss it (and prefer to avoid polishing generally).

I just got a new Rolex about 3 weeks ago and in taking off my daily wearer Explorer 1 of 2 plus years, I realized how scratched and banged up it was, I smiled.

That SD4K looks how a Rolex toolwatch should look! Don't baby it, wear it and enjoy it! I do too!

My Sd4k has a couple small marks...for some reason they seem to show up while I’m sleeping? Go figure.

the watch you would want to keep safe the most, is the watch that will accumulate most dings.

Great story and a very good perspective to have on any watch. Can't say I have memories of all the nicks and scratches on my watches but a few for sure!

agreed. my watches are worn but not abused. they tell the story that rolex watchmakers would enjoy - worn in all times without care.

Here’s my take on scratches and dings. If you could go back in time and sit at a bar with Hans Wilsdorf he’d probably ask you about your well worn watch. You’d take it off, hand it to him and he’d smile and say, “you get it”, thank you for making one of my watches your own and giving it your story.

Exactly. I switched to my green sub and it too has seen some good times. Not abused, but well-loved over the four years I have enjoyed it.

Scratches and dings = stories

Reminds me of the first scratch I got on my wedding band. It happened as we were returning to our hotel room after the reception. Not being used to wearing a ring, I grabbed the sharply edged steel door handle and put a noticeable scratch on the ring. As first I was a bit miffed, but almost 7 years later, I can still see that scratch and be reminded of that wonderful night. Of course now there are many more scratches on it to keep it company.
