New to TRF - Planning first Rolex Purchase - GMT II LN - thoughts appreciated!

Hi All -

Delighted to have joined the forum, I'm in the US and am planning out my first Rolex purchase - It will be for daily wear and I've fallen in love with the GMT Master II LN. I am currently in the process of sourcing one pre-owned. My watch dealer (who I trust explicitly and have purchased a number of non-Rolex watches) has a nice example with box and papers, its a G serial (2010) but the papers were stamped end-2012. It has not had a service. He is offering it at a fair price but has also told me that if I wait and another watch comes in post-2015 with the 5yr international warranty he would sell it to me for the same price. So my questions are:

1. I'm assuming nothing has changed between 2010-present with this watch?

2. I'm in no rush, should I wait for a newer example to come up or just go for this one? The 5y Warranty is a consideration but more importantly if I decide to trade it because it doesn't agree with me as a daily wear watch, would I be better served value-wise with a newer example? Not sure how Rolexes work in this regard

A freind who collects watches insists that a G serial watch is interesting because it was the last year before serials became scrambled, but I'm not a collector so I'm not factoring this into my thought process

Any thoughts are much appreciated, and thank you for your patience with my basic questions!

Older ones had a Green lume and the newer ones have a Blue lume.

Dont remember the exact change over date but you would be close by a few years if it matters.

As soon as you wear it its relative newness means very little. G serial is hardly vintage! As long as it hasn’t been polished I’d grab the one available now. Blue/green lume makes very little difference (for what it’s worth I prefer the earlier green lume but neither are very good to be honest, not compared to Omega lume anyway!)
The value of both will be pretty much the same within a couple of years, five year warranty or no, as long as both have box and papers. I say buy now and get wearing it.

Depends on how long is the wait for the newer one. Usually I will prefer the newer model but also dependent on the condition & if it is a complete set.

I’d get it now if you can
Price might increase
Supply might get less

It is in mint condition and has box and papers, but has not been serviced yet. Not sure how long the wait will be for a newer one - as long as it takes for someone to trade one in!

The newer blue Chromalight lume is quite a bit brighter, but there most likely will be no difference in collectibility between a G serial and a newer random serial if that is your main concern.

Green lume looks better with the green hand and dial text imho, change to blue occured around April/May 2013, along with BLNR coming out.

In any event, its a great watch, I say go for it

I have the G and have no strong feelings towards the later one even thought it has blue lume. As said above the green matches the green highlights I suppose.

The GMTIIc is my only long term reliable watch. I had it srviced, but only because I dropped it and smashed the bezel (not easy to do). So I wouldn't be overly worried about the 5 year warranty.

However I suppose it is sensible to wait for a newer one if it is the same price. But then why wait? It's maybe Rolex's best modern peice.

Am I the only one who thinks Rolex's newer 'blue' lume still looks kind of green?

My first thought would be wait about 21 days and see what is released at Basel, before you do anything, but then I remembered any new model Rolex shows there won’t be available for purchase for probably 10 months to longer.

Haha I’ve had probably close to a dozen different newer watches with the blue Lume and not one looks like it does online. They’re all somewhat of a green/blue mixture. Looks bluer than the older green Lume but never that really nice true blue you see in pics.

Exactly this. I had a BLNR and the lume just didn’t look blue to me, certainly not as the pics online suggested. Admittedly now I have a 16570 and that is far more clearly green to me (and more legible to my eye!) but I’ve yet to see true blue loom in the flesh.

I'm holding off buying anything right now to see what comes out of Basel. I'm not sure if I expect much, but as I'm in no rush, I figure might as well...

i had one, and it was great, but i eventually flipped it because i missed having 5 digits.

overall, you can't really lose with a 116710LN

Just budget the cost of $600 for a service at RSC and plan to be without the watch for a month or so.

Nope...the blue lume still has a green tint to it.
