What gives ???

I’m fairly new here to these parts of the Interwebs, more of a long time lurker, recent posting convert and I know the SS Sport shortage situation has been beat to death here recently, but this is making my face hurt. I have convinced myself that what I really need in life right now is a Datejust 41 or two. I prefer to at least start with the ADs and see what they have and what they can are willing to do. I have 3 that I have dealt with for a few years. I buy a watch or two every now and then and stay in reasonable contact with each. For that matter I have a HUGE deposit with one of them for a paid in full white Daytona C and a partial on a watch to be named later (think, no dream, Coke C GMT). All three ADs quoted me full price on a DJ41. Today one of them sited the current sport model shortage as justification. Generally, I consider myself an easy to get along with sort, fairly amusing from time to time, I’m pretty serious about my watch collection (all three ADs know this), and my Kung Fu is generally strong. All three have, in the past, offered me reasonable discounts on everything from Tudors to Sub C No date, my Exp II Polar was a steal, and even my BLNR was a slight discount (7%-12% depending on model). What am I missing here? And, yes I am very butt hurt about all of this.

To remedy this I did contact a TRF TS this afternoon and a deal is in the mix, so my little first world problem will work out, but still....what gives???

I don't think you're missing anything. Using the sports SS shortage as justification for not discounting a DJ is silly. Grey prices show this: currently, an NIB sports SS model will cost you over retail; you can get a DJ for under MSRP.

I was going to suggest you check out other ADs, but it seems like you've already figured out a way around it. Still, if you're the kind of person who gets a thrill out of payback, you can pull a Pretty Woman and go back to the offending AD with the DJ on your wrist, then walk out saying, "Big mistake. Big. HUGE."

Only in my mind. I can be totally satisfied with the thought of doing so. I am a lot better at talking smack about doing such a thing, more than actually doing it. I can imagine that being a fairly liberating experience and that's good enough for me.

The SS shortage is on certain sports models not the DJs as they know full well so you're right to move on if they won't budge and get a better price, and as they have so many of them to shift not a smart policy.

The best revenge is living well. If you get the watch you want at the price you think is fair, that's satisfaction enough. Enjoy!

Yeah, I don't get it. I also don't get how they could say it with a straight face. Maybe they were hoping the glare from all the DJs in the case would blind the OP so he wouldn't notice them stifling the laughter.

Well, my guess is that they've got to get what they can on the DJ's to make up what they're not getting from the lack of professional models in the case.

I would only pay full list for the DJ if you can pick up the Daytona at the same time.

Sounds reasonable, until they realize a discounted sale gets them more money than no sale at all.

At least throw in a pair of sunglasses.

When I was in the market for a DJ41 I visited 3 different AD's and only one was willing to offer a slight ($200.00) discount. I ended up purchasing from one of the top TS on here. Got a nice discount and couldn't be happier with the watch.

You'll love the watch!
