Icon4 Question about Buying from a “Grey Dealer”

Hey Guys. Recently bought a “HULK” from a local AD. They were very friendly, service was great and ended up only waiting a month for it while paying MSRP.

Now, I cant stop thinking about my grail watch which happens to be the Yachtmaster 2. The Local AD has the older Blue Hands in stock but would have to order the New Mercedes Hands.

Question I have is there is a dealer (In NJ) “Labelle Jewelery” that has a brand new YM2 for $15.5 all in. I’ll see if my AD can match that but don’t think they’ll be able to, but Whats the deal with Grey Dealers? Is there no ROLEX warranty at all?, no warranty card etc? Labelle has great reviews but when spending this much money on something I want to keep forever, is it too risky to save maybe 1k?

Thanks guys!

Question about Buying from a “Grey Dealer”

It could very well come with the warranty card, and despite what some people may say, Rolex warranties are transferable, that is if the watch is still under warranty through Rolex. Would just depend on what the original owner kept and sold to them.

But hopefully they offer some sort of warranty themselves because it is very likely that the Rolex warranty has expired, I think the YM II was released in 2007.

I personally wouldn’t buy brand new, I’d only ever buy pre-owned. Once you find out how old the watch is, id then ask when it was last serviced, if ever, and if so who serviced it. Then ask about the warranty they offer, then ask if they have any authenticity guarantee.

I also think you should be able to find a pre-owned one for more than just 1k off retail.

For only 1K difference I'd go AD

It would not take much being wrong to burn through $1000 fixing the watch.

Servicing the watch alone may cost more than $1K so I'd go for AD since you'll have the paper in your name and brand new watch,

Question about Buying from a “Grey Dealer”

I would never ask my AD to match a gray dealers price. Different business, different costs. They don’t compare. I would try and work the best deal I could with my AD and then compare to the gray price on my own. If it’s even close I’m going AD.

As long as you're shopping around, I would have a look in the classifieds here. I've seen BNIB better than your gray price.

And whatever you do, I would definitely go with the blue hands. The mercedes hands were a step backwards, IMO, in both legibility and looks.

Agreed about the Blue hands, however I like the hour markers better. Its white and silver, not white and blue. Just looks a little cleaner. The 12 O’Clock marker and 6 O’Clock marker are different as well

Agreed. 15k sounds high (though it’s been a while since i looked). I would have thought that 13k would get the OP a lightly used one with a good number of years of warranty left

It is an awesome watch!

I used to believe in grey dealers, but have changed my tune on them. Going through an AD is usually a minimal markup and you get the peace of mind of knowing everything is as it should be and if it isn't they'll do everything they can to fix it. I've been burned by bad customer service enough to know it can be worth a small premium for great customer service.
