New Patek

Hi there!

I am looking to get a new dress watch and I cannot decide between 5205r black dial and 5396g with breguet numerals. I will be my first patek and i have a SubC for daily. I am a sucker for the breguet numerals and deployant clasp but I really like the versatility of 5205 dial.
Any pros and cons between these two pieces.

Thank you

Hi there!

These two were the references I was looking at when I bought my 5205. I ended up choosing said watch because of the dial layout and the size of the days and months. When you compare side by side, the 5396 has tiny type on those windows compared to the 5205. Also, the hands would cover the windows for a good amount of time between 11-1. The 24 hour clock on the 5396 is also cut off a bit more on both the top and bottom.

The big plus for the 5396: yes it comes with a deployant clasp.

Just my perspective. They are both beautiful though. YMMV.

I Aldrich

I am a 5205r white dial owner. I was torn between the two models as well, but after trying both I preferred the apertures and case of the 5205. At the end it's a personal choice, but you can't go wrong. They're both great pieces and it's an awesome complication.

New Patek

Dang — that is a TOUGH choice, even for me.

The 5396 just has the classic look and feel that you expect from a dress watch...Having said that I would go with the 5205 - as it is one of the SHARPEST dress watches IMHO — and it has just a little more overall wrist presence with it geometry of the dial - that just does it for me.

You’re not going to go wrong with either FOR SURE — you’ve narrowed it down to two GREAT options.

Good luck, enjoy!! And can’t wait to see pics!!

I really like the 5205. It is a beautifully executed modern Patek. I love the lug design as it adds a little more to the overall look and feel of this reference.

Good luck with your decision. There are no wrong answers. Both choices are some of the best available.

I own the 5205r black dial and love it. IMO it is one of the hottest looking modern Pateks and very versatile both for dressy and smart casual occasions.

The 5396g is more the conservative classic choice. I have tried it on a number of times. It appears smaller, more understated and under-the-radar than the 5205r. If that is your preference it is lovely for a classic black suit and white shirt.

The 5205R, esp the white dial version is the more dressy of the two imo. Those curves on the case really makes it stand out.

Or the 5522? I heard this watch can actually reproduce a 5711 by itself so no need to buy one too...

These are my 2 top ACs, black 5205r is sexy and has a cool, eclectic, art deco vibe, while the white dial RG with Breguets is very handsome and classical looking.

The new blue jumps to my new one seed for the 5205s and given my 1815 maybe makes my yearning for 5170p lesson a bit for a new cheaper target

Absolutely love the 5205 aesthetic. Fantastic balanced dial. Love the discontinued two tone black.

Hello Aldrich!

I also have a hard time looking at the annual calendar feature on 5396.
Thank you for your time

Thank you. I have only tried out the 5205r in person and it is a beautiful modern
Patek.
Wear it in good health

Yes, of course. The OP should be considering the 5522. It will make you feel full when you’re hungry, and hungry when you’re full.
