How to increase chances of acquiring a piece?

Hi all,

New to the PP game. I'm on the waitlist at my local AD, but they are a smaller dealer and are estimating a 2-3+ year wait for the 5167A. I did not inquire about the 5167R, but I would imagine it would only be slightly better.

How do you increase your chances of getting one of these? Just call around and see if you can get on a waitlist?

Also I'm curious, regardless if there is a waitlist or not, are there some dealers that will offer you a watch if you are there in person, cash in hand? (thinking of swinging by a few dealers on the next vacation)

Thanks!

find a good AD, not necessarily the one who will get you the watch first. The first one is the hardest and it gets easier from there. So chose correctly now and dig in for the long haul.

I'm trying to find a good AD myself that will adhere to a list....most will be using the popular stainless sports as "reward" pieces now for other major purchases you do with them.

i think this is the best thing to do. be patient...if you are like most of us, this will be only once piece of many to come. you have to start a relationship at some point

Buy a different watch, why wait 3 years for an aquanaut, it’s a nice watch, and a couple of years ago when you could easily get one used for around $11,000 USD it was a compelling alternative to a Royal Oak or a Stainless Steel Rolex, but at retail and having to wait years I just don’t see it. So many watches that are much nicer that you can get today, and no need to chase the latest fad that everyone else is running after.

Three years is insane if that’s even accurate.

Don’t know where you are located but if you want to go the AD route, rather than calling, stop in and strike up a conversation with the sales people. I think you have a better chance of getting on a list that way, rather than calling on the phone. If you make it on the list, then you can call/text for updates and keep your name warm in their mind. Good luck.

Seems silly but if you buy another watch even differ t brand from same AD, I suspect they will be more likely to obtain you a 5167a quicker bc of your “relationship”

Only problem is, this AD is exclusively a Patek dealer.

I have at least planned on walking in every couple months or so and get recognized. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to do other than buying some jewelry as well.

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't wait three years for *anything*! Life is to short.

Good luck in your quest, hope everything works out.

OP, pls consider buying a dress watch, like Calatrava, if you do not have one. This will certainly bump you up the list. Ask your AD if such an arrangement works, before pulling the trigger.

Certainly prior purchases will help. The AD is going to have no trouble moving this watch, so they may offer it to their best clients first. Getting something less hot, like a Calatrava is going to move things along.

It just depends if you want to play the game. It seems insane to have to essentially beg your AD to sell you watch, but luxury is scarcity. Personally, I think this game is pretty stupid, and I just bought one second hand from a trusted seller. Keep in mind, I was not interested in repeat business and this was back when the watch was alot less in demand.

I recall a lot of pieces (except 5711 and application pieces) in the Patek catalogue become "unlocked" after I purchased the 5296G from my AD.

Full access to the unicorn 5711 only becomes a reality after I added another 2 PP, 1 AP and 3 Rolex that my AD carries, within 2 years.

I reckon it is more economical to buy straight from a grey dealer after this experience. However, in terms of building relationship, I think there is a value to it

It's all about relationships. Find someone you enjoy and make them a friend. Talk about things besides watches and get to know them. This might sound silly, but never miss a party. My AD host 2 or 3 "socials" every year and I make sure to stop by and support all of them.

You mention a 5167R. That one should be more easily attainable. If you like it, and I personally think it is very nice, you might want to inquire about it. The rose gold and brown go very well together.

I have to agree with this. And MHO is that money spent is the fastest way and best way to get attention.

Don't buy jewelry. Thats never a good expectation to get in to.

Its a good idea to stop by frequently though.

Only issue is that I’m liking at a 5990 and all secondary market pieces are $10k above list!!

My GF's dad bought a 5970R from an AD in LA and couldn't even get a 5711 from them. It's rough out there.

Over list yes, but is it justified based on the chance of finding it at an AD? I would probably say no.

My favorite Nautilus for sure, but its easier to find than a 5712. Id call around on that one especially since random AD's probably won't immediately brush off your request. They are sick and tired of everyone calling about the 11 and 12 so you might actually get somewhere.

that one seems to come in batches far more than the rest. So what i think is there might be one batch of deliveries per year vs 2 or 3 deliveries for other references. So its about timing too. A year might be the next delivery as i know they don't make a lot vs some of the other Nautilus. There were several incomings here (mine included) in the Jan./Feb. time frame.

I think if you go for the 67R the wait will be much shorter, not sure but would think 3-6 months, quite easy to get compared to SS models
