First Patek - 5146 / 5396 / 5205

Fellow Patek enthusiasts,

I'd like to hear your thoughts on a first Patek. While I'd love a 5711 in steel, we all know the premium is just too high right now on the 2nd market. I'm OK building a relationship and growing my Patek collection over time.

I'm current loving my BLNR and have on rotation a 116520, a 116400GV, a IW3799-01, and a IW3905-02.

Let me know what you guys think!

My first Patek was the 5205g. Sold it after two years. If you will be considering more Pateks in the future, skip the AC complications.

I agree entirely. I owned 5235G but same outcome. I love the brand but the ACs are slow movers and hard to resell.

I agree , after owning all the AC references with the exception of 5396. I came to the same conclusion. So I moved to Patek manual Chrono , and you know what they are going in the same direction. I change my view of what to collect mainly drived by this silly market.

Yes, I would see this first. As for resale I think this may be the best AC as well, looks very well received.

⬆️⬆️⬆️ Agree...this looks like a beauty! I’m looking at an AC Patek for my next as well. The pilot was my first. If you like the AC complication...get what will make you happy.
As for your choices, I really like the 5146’s balanced dial, timeless look, and the ability to dress up/down...IMO. Can’t go wrong with any one of them

Are ACs holding less value due to commonality of the complication? I like the look of the simple Calatrava's but I really am not a fan of the pocket watch-like back cover.

IMO its because they are not expensive or rare enough like the grand complications, which by Patek's definition includes PC's. They are also not casual and sporty enough like the aquas or nautilus. Every AD has many examples where as a PC or sports they don't have very many.

If you are buying to keep and like the watch none of that matters though.

My recommendation for a first Patek is to try several on in person and choose the one that you like best. ACs are not that rare that if you visit a few ADs, you will be able to try on the different variants.

People talk a lot about re-sale value here. But most of that has been in the past 3 years since the slowdown in the Chinese/Russian market as well as the rapid increase in production numbers over the past 5+ years. No one knows what value retention will be like in 5-10 years.

Just a few years ago, the ACs were the most popular watch purchased by Chinese visitors at Patek ADs, because they were in the "sweet spot" for what they were looking for.

The 5205G blue dial looks nice, although I don't know when they will start showing up at ADs.

id love to have a 5740 or a 5320. I honestly don't know what i would pick, price aside

I might actually go for the 5320 only because there are so many Nautilus models i already like. I don't have a ton on my must have list outside of the sports range.

Yup, I would that . Sounds smart . I like 5320G , my friend Karl seems to enjoy it a lot. I mean if you are gonna keep it for long term it doesn’t matter because who knows what’s happen in 7-10 years. But short term wise, if you want a play it safe then the Nautilus path is safe.

true, my 'want' list outside sports watches is 5320 and 5270 (salmon dial or gold bracelet, i like both) but that is it.

I’ll jump on the 5205 band wagon...but I am a fan of 5396 as well. It is a classic dress watch that got me hooked on the AC complication....I don’t purchase any luxury type items based on future re-sale speculation...just what I like/want.

Good luck!! No wrong decision here!

I do like this idea, anyway get the 5740 however it happens. If I was ever going to have just one piece I think this is a serious contender.

I was able to checkout a 5205G with the new blue dial this past weekend. While it is a beautiful, I have to say it wasn't the shock and awe I experienced when I saw the first photos. Anyone else seen one in person? If so, I'm curious to hear your reaction, as I have not looked at many Pateks given my new focus in this brand.

The 5146 is really looking appealing to me, and now I am trying to choose between a 5146R or 5146P.

Couple thoughts I have:

5146R
· More intelligent choice from a loss in value standpoint. I have actually never sold any watches I've purchased, but I always somehow gain some pleasure knowing I am buying smart
· I have never owned a Rose Gold watch, but I like the material. I also like the idea that my first Patek is a bit more of a unique looking piece in my collection. I was very close to purchasing a Day Date in Everose with the anniversary olive dial, but Rolex's Everose is a bit too pink against my skin
· I'm not 100% sold on the cream dial against the Rose Gold
· The watch generally feels fairly light compared to what I am used to wearing
· I'm still iffy on the numerical at 12/3/9

5146P
· I love Platinum as a material. When I designed my wife's engagement ring, I spent quite a bit time working with the jeweler on specific alloying options -- Speaking of which, does anyone know the alloying element(s) used for the Patek's platinum alloy?
· I love the weight
· I love how clean the face looks
· My hesitation here is many of my watches are either black or white faced stainless steel watches. This has a elegance of being platinum, but from a color standpoint, doesn't add much new to my collection
· The price difference is the other deterrent for me What's the respectful and right way to ask an AD about how much they will discount? I want the best deal I can get, but I do not want to start my relationship with the AD with an outlandish way of asking about this

Thanks again folks! Almost there (:

If I rem correctly, 5205 comes with deployant buckle. A bit disappointing compared with other Patek ACs.

Actually the 5205 comes with a tang buckle, same as the 5235G. 5146 come with a deployant clasp.

I had both of the watches you are considering : 5164R and 5146P. Both beautiful and with advantages and disadvantages.
5146P
- my favorite AC , love the platinum weight, clean dial, prefer to have PR vs PM indicators that the 5205 has. It’s a classic.
- Main disadvantage is that is a dog , unfortunately when you try to sell you will get offers like 28k , not kidding. So if you buy at 30-32k then you won’t lose that much.
- you don't have to baby the watch as you would a 5164R. I really like the fact that is an annual calendar that comes w lumen in the hands and minute markers. Love the subdials, Patek DNA. Windows on 5205 or 5396 are cool but no mojo.

5164R
- beautiful rose gold/rubber combo . Watch stands out but taking care of that bezel on gold is a pain !! ...
Resale is better , if you get discount on it then the loss will be little.
I would rather source a Nautilus if possible.

Ok, today's the day, I think. Any last minute advice folks? I'm really tempted with the 5146P, but the 5146R just seems so much more of a wise choice from a value for $ standpoint. Movement etc is the same in both, so I'm basically paying almost 55% more or $23k for a modified dial and a different precious metal.

Thoughts?
