Help needed to decide between two tone sub and Daytona

Hi, I could use some input on a conundrum that I’m faced with. We have decided to get my Dad a retirement gift. I have never been into two tone watches so thought I’d get some opinions from those that are. My regular AD has two options for me. The two tone sub with black dial and bezel and the two tone Daytona with champagne dial and diamond hour markers. My wife and I are split as to which way we should go, so any input would be appreciated

First off I love Daytonas and I want one badly. However, in two tone, the Sub just looks better to me and the two tone Sub is a classic.

No idea how to help.

Does he want a watch?
Does he need a chronograph?
How does he feel about anything that is two tone? (Personally I do not like two-tone)
What watches does he have now?
Is he going to wear it?

Too many questions for such a high dollar personal purchase.

I’d go for the 2 tone sub. Personally I’d do the blue two tone one. Most guys don’t like diamonds on their watches ... I do tho. But I wouldn’t have it on a daytona

Go for the sub, it has a date that he will appreciate and actually use.

I’m not a Daytona guy so the Sub gets my vote.

The Sub wears larger than the Daytona, which is something to consider if you dad has, say, a small or a large wrist.
Personally, I prefer the Daytona as a watch, but I don't like the diamond markers. Having said that, if the above 2-tone Daytona is your only option (i.e. no standard black or white dial or even champagne without diamonds), I would get the Sub for my dad because I think it's more neutral (for a guy) and less complicated (for your dad).

Sub is the saver choice as he might not prefer to have diamonds on his watch

Thanks for the quick replies. The sub was my natural choice. Currently he has a two tone datejust that my Mum and I chose back in 1986 when I was a boy. He has worn it every day and loves it. That being said, I think he deserves an upgrade and judging by how my he enjoys looking at my watches ( and moaning that I don’t have a two tone ) I know he will love it.

I'd take a TT Sub or GMT over a TT Daytona. I just think both those models look better in TT than the Daytona.

If he has been wearing a DJ for all these years, the Sub will seem huge to him. I'd look for a Daytona without diamonds. Just my .02 cents.

I would go with the Sub because of the date complication.

Tough one for me. Big fan of both Daytona and Submarinerl. With Daytona you get a more 'elegant' watch vs the Sub which IMO is more sporty and rugged. Submariner had better legibility vs Daytona, though. What is your dad's style? Mine was a business owner for many years and enjoyed his Daytona 16523 white dial on a daily basis. He's now retired and wears his DJ 36mm from 1978 daily. Daytona juts sits. His style is more casual these days and he finds himself reaching for the DJ regularly while wearing the Daytona for special occasions. My dad also loves TT. I would do a bit more investigating.. Both watches are excellent choices, each with its own qualities. Keep us posted on the decision

How large is his wrist? The Daytona is better on a small wrist, imho. Subs can feel unwieldy. Both are great watches!!!!

Not a 2-tone guy over here, but that sub is stunning. I like the aesthetic of that over the Daytona personally.
