Legacy watch
Hi all. Late in 2017 I became a father for the first time and I have finally convinced my wife I should get a new watch to commemorate the event.
I currently have a few watches in rotation... speedmaster which is worn on various natural leather straps (very versatile), Tag Monaco 24 (big and bold), Tudor Black Bay Black (the eta “smiley face” so a short production run and vintage looks) and last year I bought a pre owned Daytona WG with panda dial on leather (my special occasion/grail watch). I am looking for suggestions for something interesting to buy, ideally pre owned and purchased new in 2017, something that was discontinued in 2017 (deep sea 116600 maybe?) or something newly released in 2017 (or 2018 at a push, e.g. the new Pepsi). Ideally something a little off the beaten track or at least less commonly seen. E.g. Much as I love the BLNR I seem to see them around, as I do with the black sub. While they are both beautiful pieces and likely to still be desirable in 20+ year so I can pass them down I fear the former is too “popular” and the later too much like my Tudor in appearance (hence maybe the deep sea). Apologies for be long winded post! 🙄 |

First - congratulations on becoming a father!
Second - Like you said, if you want to push it to 2018 (and feel like waiting), then the new Pepsi would be a good choice. However, ANYTHING will be a good choice, especially if you're planning to pass it down. |

Congratulations - I too became a father late last year and am looking to buy a new watch, knowing that it’ll be my son’s to wear in some 20 years or so.
I’m tempted to go for a Milgauss because, at least in its current guise, I think it’ll be a highly collectible watch in a couple of decades time (and fun to wear in the meantime). That said, there may be a good argument to avoid anything too esoteric. E.g. if my father were to hand down to me an oak or lapis dial yellow gold oyster from the 80’s, I’d perhaps have put it to the back of a drawer... |

Thanks Dom. Pepsi is tempting but waiting lists are crazy I heard? I was tempted by the older aluminium bezel model but feels like prices there have been ramped up recently..
Horatio, a Milgauss is an interesting option but was there a model change 2017/2018? Ideally I want to pick a piece that means something for the era but I don’t know much about that line. It’s a good point too about perhaps trying to ensure I buy something HE will like in 20 years rather than something I like now. Perhaps that means I should stay conventional but trends are so hard to predict. |

First off, congrats! If you’re looking for something special and released in 2017, why not a 50th Anniversary Sea Dweller (SD43). It’s a special watch and would be a great addition.

If it’s something off the beaten track, perhaps an AP Diver?

2017 gives you some good options. Obviously a SD would be a great choice. A SS D41 came out in 2017 and that is a timeless piece (my personal favorite watch I've ever owned). You don't have a GMT function watch, so a SS SkyDweller would fit in nicely.

I would agree with all those who said SD43. If you want something big for 2017 look no further.

+1 for Sd43. Nothing is as satisfying as buying a Rolex sports watch. Still breaking-in my day old SS SkyD but I doubt it would equal my excitement as when I got my Sd40 and Daytona

I was going to suggest this myself. I think this would be a great choice. A 116600 would be a good choice as well if you want something smaller.

Congratulations on the baby. Why not consider the 116600 SD4K. It seems to answer all your wishes. It's recently discontinued and it is not as common as a Submariner.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The 43mm SD is definitely interesting and I love the red text but am not 100% sure the cyclops should be on the SS and think maybe the 40mm is better for me. I have bigger watches that is true but I haven’t seen the 43mm SD in person, perhaps I should.
AP Dover could be an option. Maybe I should check them out in person too. Thank you for the off the beaten track suggestion. I like the skydweller in person but can’t bring myself to pay such strong money for a stainless steel watch. I bought my white gold Daytona (admittedly on leather strap) pre owned for less then the pre tax SS skydweller. Expensive stainless, like a nautilus, just don’t appeal to me and I am reluctant to pay mega money for the latest “hot” watch. I think the SD 40mm or 43mm seem to tick all the boxes but finding them in one place to compare in person will be difficult :( |

Sorry to bump and old thread but reporting in that I picked up an Sd4k today. I can’t post a photo for some reason...
Guess I will end up selling the Tudor black bay now as this will be a daily wearer along with a speedmaster and the Tudor is similar in style |

Thankyou. I managed to buy a 2017 dated piece and given that was effectively the end of the run for this version I think it fits the “birth year” requirement

SD43 for the significance of the 50th anniversary or blue skyD (if you can get one) as it was first “born” in 2017

Legacy Watch Thoughts
Here are my thoughts on your question. This comes from an old (57) father of two.
I’ll break this down in two ways. First the watch and why. Then “the process”and why. The Watch Personally, I would pick the no date Sub (114060) as the perfect legacy watch (more to follow in second section). It is an iconic watch, beloved for its rugged durability and, with no date, clean lines. The no date also harkens back to the history of the Sub. This was the original design and I think adhering to that “originality” makes it a good legacy. The Process 1) Wear the watch and enjoy it. Don’t make it a daily wearer, but don’t put it in a safe. Wear it on special occasions, cool vacations with your family, important events involving your child. 2) When your child graduates for college/ University and gets their first real job (not a barista at Starbucks), gift the watch. It will be a symbol of your love and a symbol of crossing the rubicon from dependence to independence. A stainless Sub will look appropriate on a younger person; not too flashy. 3) Your child will have a birth year watch, which I think is very cool. Not that easy to do as you get older and a great legacy. Frankly, I’m tearing and choking up writing this. It happens to us old guys. Best of luck on your decision and, more importantly, starting your family. Prolly the greatest thing you can do in life. Godspeed! |
