three watches you regret buying

1. Pam 317, got it cheap, loved the all black, but realised the side pusher easily gets bust, the ceramic could be scratched, and worst off the atrocious resale price.

2. VC overseas Dual time. Ok I liked this watch, I had this weird thing about owning all three sports model from the Holy Trinity. Well the Nautilus stayed, The royal oak stayed, the VC... well again atrocious resale value.

3 Rolex Deepsea Dblue. Top heavy, looked disproportional, loved the romance behind the watch, disliked it on my wrist. But one thing I learnt, you always make your money back on a Rolex sports model.

The moral of the story is, only buy Rolex on impluse

I wait so long to finally make up my mind that I have yet to purchase anything I have later regretted. Love them all.

Breitling’s
Omega’s
Panerai’s

All nice watches. Got killed on resale. Thought they would scratch my Rolex itch and they did not. Cost me a lot of money to do it that way. Should have just bought Rolex first.

Omega Electric Blue..
Bought NOS, and taught me the hard way to try watches on before buying them. It was WAY too thin, WAY too blingy for a dive watch.. sold it back almost immediately..

Sinn 556i - Wore super small on me, and honestly while it was a VERY well built watch I thought it was over rated.

Tag Aquaracer - Need I say more? it's a Tag, I didn't know what I was buying and it was a massive waste of money.

Bonus:
Steinhart OVM - Honestly, it's a great watch but too close of a homage. I felt cheap and embarrassed wearing it so off it went.

IWC Top Gun, IWC Galapagos first edition and 16610 LV.

The first two I honestly consider them a true joke rather than proper watches, everything with a 7750 inside that costs more than 400 Euro is a complete waste of money imho, no matter how fancied up they'll tell you it is. Top Gun resale loss was a punch in the stomach, while I managed to make a tiny profit on the Galapagos.
About the 16610 LV I knew in first place I would have got tired of it in less then a year and well,I've flipped it after only 2 months.

I spent $2300 on a TAG-Heuer Carrera Calibre 5. I wore it for about 2 years and then inquired about getting another TAG from the same dealer, I asked what he would give me for the watch in trade and he said he couldn't give me anything for it as he would have a difficult time reselling it. It was in pristine condition. I still have it and wear it rarely. It's a nice watch but it isn't really worth anything despite what I spent on it.

That's kind of why I decided on Rolex for my next watch.

All of these were purchased pre-owned, so no real hit taken...phew!

1. Cartier Basculante - looked great in photos, but just too small. posted it for the sale the day I got it.

2. Omega Speedmaster Reduced - too small once I received it, and didn't feel like it was worth the amount paid for (I felt like Seiko produced a better product at 1/3 the price)

3. JLC Reserve de Marche - too small...but gorgeous in photos

Notice a trend? I've learned my lesson to not purchase a watch based on pictures alone; definitely see it in the flesh first.

1. Omega Globemaster - Terrible bracelet with sharp edges, no quickset date
2. Tudor Black Bay Blue - The oversized crown dug into my wrist. Loved the design, hated wearing it.
3. Seiko SBQJ017 - Thought I'd like quartz as a backup, but hated how small and light it was. Not much of a loss in dollars, but the largest loss I've take on ~15 watches thus far.

Only 2:

1- hublot big bang ferrari...liked the design, love ferrari so it was like toy but so huge, hated it quickly. Swapped to a 5164 and lost 4k usd (~20%) in 2 weeks

2- patek 5712g, I like it but always wanted the steel, ended up having both unnecessarily, not sure how big a hit I will take flipping it.

1. Breitling transocean unitime pilot- too big and busy and the mesh bracelet was way to dated looking
2. Calibre de Cartier - lug shape never fit my wrist properly
3. AP ROO 44mm in Titanium- really overly grey looking, and i got bored almost immediately.... and i passed up a WG Daytona on OF to buy it. Big mistake.

Dang Tyler, I’m sorry the UK clouds kept your Ti from shining!

All jokes aside, I can’t get this watch off my wrist. It’s light on the wrist, yet powerful with the presence. I haven’t worn my non summer RG and CE for a long time since this gets all the play. Could be my favorite watch in the collection next to my special 41’s.

I’m wearing it as we speak

I just couldn't get on board with the flat grey. If it was a bit more dynamic maybe i could or if the case was SS since the Ti is a bit grey too which normally i like. I like the 44mm ROO case design a lot. The biggest regret was not so much the watch, but the watch i passed up to get it. I guess grey is too gloomy for the weather here

My regrets:

SubC YG Blue
RG Daytona 2x

Both are outstanding watches. I tried to do the RG Daytona twice, one black dial another pink dial with baguettes.

It’s not that they were bad watches, I just bought them for the sake of buying them. There were other watches in the collection that got more wrist time.

I’ve always wanted a JLC Reverso...the times I’ve tried them on they didn’t sing to me. Love the brand the history on the Reverso.

The only watch I really regret getting was the red Tudor BB rose. I loved the watch but I knew prior to buying it was too big for me, but went ahead with it anyway. Sold it in less than a year. That said, I am now anxiously waiting for the BB 58 to fill that void..

TT datejust with green Roman numeral dial. Was drunk in Cabo and it looked awesome in the display case. Next day it really didn’t look good on me but thought it would grow on me. Nope...too dressy and the gold was too loud for my style and got more than a few comments from friends. Traded towards my first AP.

My first watch. Big 44mm speedmaster.

I didn’t know any better. Then I regret selling it too, I would still have my “first watch”.

Also the black gmt. I’m glad I sold it.

keep buying/selling daytonas - cool but to small and shiny for me
also had a lot of milgauss - nice but the case design hurt my wrist

I would say no real regrets but like so many of us my taste in watches has evolved in the 30+ years I have been collecting. In addition to changing tastes, my finances also changed so that opened up a whole new group of options for me. The watches that didn't fit in with my evolving taste likely got sold unless they had some sentimental value like my first "high-end" watch...a Cartier Santos Moonphase which I got as a high school graduation present and will never part with.

If I do have regrets, it's how much money I lost on some of my purchases as my collection and tastes have evolved. On this front I have gotten much smarter over the years and I now know more about the pre-owned market and also know to negotiate on the pricing. In the beginning I would buy new and discounts would be minimal.

I haven't bought too many watches, and I don't regret any of them. I have learned that I really favor the 39mm size, however. When I put on my Explorer, it just feels great and the size fits my wrist well.

Future watches for me will likely be thinner, 39mm-40mm models. So have learned something from the few acquisitions I have made.

I must be very particular in my watch purchases.

I have never sold or traded any of my watches so I can't even name one.
