Weird Rolex story on train

The other day on the train home. I noticed some blonde dude got on the train with a Rolex...stylish dude. Navy Blazer with floral colored pocket square, slim fit khakis with no socks and loafers which had tassels. So stylish... about early 30’s if I was to guess. He was married as I could see the ring.

He was wearing two tone datejust with jubilee. I notice peoples watches on the train usually and this day was no different. I admired it. Thought it worked for him. The look worked.

So here’s the weird part. The guy sat across from me so I can see the guy’s wrist. It was rush hour. Train started to get packed really packed. As the train moved and people shifted around a bit, I could clearly continue to catch a glimpse of the Rolex....

15 mins into the ride. People shifted around some more... I noticed the Rolex was gone. I’m like huh?... what happened? I try to see if it was on the other wrist. Nope. In place of the Rolex was a digital Apple Watch but it wasn’t an Apple Watch, it was some other brand.

Crazy thing, dude gets off with me and I can see him pick up his mobile to make a call. Likely for someone to pick him up...which is usually friends or family.

So... the question I obviously am asking is... who in the world changes their watch midway on the train? Are you hiding it from your wife? Your family? Your friends? I mean the town I live in is pretty affluent. So what makes someone swap out watches half way? My wife thinks he was hiding his watch from his spouse. Weird.

This was reminiscent of my last trip to Saudi where the girls change into their traditional clothes midway in flight...but I understood the rational there...

In this scenario I’m perplexed. Odd behavior... weirdest thing I’ve seen in a while.

Perhaps he thought someone might try to take it and thought better of it.

This is a really affluent town... so doubt it.

Could be anything. Maybe he was headed to the gym or going to play some sports.

Weather was pouring rain. We don’t have gyms in town. People have home gyms. There are no public parks.

I’ve seen people take off their rings to pretend like they are not married. But watches?

I don't know, it could be a number of reasons. It seems weird that he'd have to hide the watch from his spouse -- kind of like living a double life.

Maybe he was concerned someone was staring at his Rolex?

DJ are ubiquitous. No reason to ogle the poor watch!

Maybe his wife doesn't know he has it. He's having an illicit affair with his Rolex

i think i saw a thread of yours talking about how youre in NYC.. if this is a crowded train like the 6 during rush hour or any LIRR eastbound and the entire train fills up, maybe he's worried it'll get taken. Either that or he doesn't normally wear it and didn't feel comfortable wearing it

The POS digital unit was a gift, he hates it, but has to make spousal unit happy. Just a guess.

Hold up...guess two... he has some mad, hardcore hipster friends that are fully digitized and he is super desperate to fit in with that crowd.

Wow....interesting story. Definitely a weird twist! Something was obviously going on. Exactly what it was, I guess we'll never know for sure. Thanks for sharing.

I think I have the answer. This scenario has happened to me. I was on the BART train here in the Bay Area. Even though I live in an affluent area, one never knows who might be on the train. I took a seat before the train got crowded, and a guy sat opposite me. I noticed he was checking me out (not uncommon for me in the Bay Area), and then I saw that he kept looking at my Day-Date. I’d look up and would see him staring at my watch. I became nervous and tried to cover my watch with my sleeve, but I could still see him trying to catch a glimpse of my watch. About 15 mins. into the ride, I discreetly took off my Rolex and put on a Swiss Army watch I had in my gym bag. I got off a couple stops later and was relieved when the guy didn’t follow me off the train.
