We've all been in these kinds of situations before. I'm curious to see what other posters' reactions are.

Great thread!!!
I generally say something! Like, "I like your Explorer!" I think most people enjoy chatting about it!! Most people will reciprocate, but occasional they don't!! Either way, it's cool to see in the wild!! I'm hoping to see a Millgauss sometime, as that is my daily wear! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If I feel it’s an appropriate situation and I can do so discreetly, I will compliment their watch. Whether I choose to continue the conversation is based on how they respond. Many people just say thanks and obviously don’t want to talk further, others LOVE talking watches, like me!
I actually was having lunch alone at a sushi bar the other day and another guys was sitting two seats down from me, also alone, and was wearing a gorgeous matte dial Sub. I complimented his watch and then asked what reference it was and he had no idea what I was talking about. I then asked what year it is and he said somewhere in the 1960s. He clearly knew nothing about the watch. No big deal, I just dropped the conversation and left him alone. I think it’s fine to broach the subject discreetly and gauge the reply, but do NOT make a big scene right off the bat. “OMG, YOU ARE WEARING A ROLEX! ME TOO, I’M WEARING A ROLEX TOO!” Lol, please don’t do that. Every once in a while, you encounter another WIS and have a really great talk. So nothing wrong with complimenting the watch if it’s in the right environment and it can be discreetly done. |

Ha! True. I was in a bar last year and some kid had what I thought was YG Sub and I said nice watch. He very enthusiastically thanked me and immediately took it off for me to hold. It was an Invicta. Lol. I made sure to cover my wrist. |

I was just on an extended vacation ( for me 5 weeks) in Florida and being in an influential area I only saw 1 Seadweller and then on the plane the guy in front of me in row 1 had on a TT Sub. My Hawkeye caught that right away and l did hold myself back from saying hello nice Sub because l thought that might be rude of me. I guess l just didn't have the right feeling at the time although it was nice to see another Sub.

I have taken the advice of others here and do not comment on watches. It seems that more bad can come of it than good. This said, I really like discussing watches so I will engage if queried about my watch.
In the month or so that I have had my watch, I have had only one comment, from an older friend who doesn’t know watches. She commented on how shiny it was, to which my wife replied “It should be... he cleans it every week”. I laughed, nudged her under the table so that she let the conversation drop. I have had students notice my watches (not the Rolex) in the past, and I enjoy when I run into a student who is a WIS (or on their way). Joe

Odds of running across another WIS wearing a Rolex or any other nice watch is slim. Most people are relatively clueless when it comes to watches, so I don’t usually say anything.

I mind my own business unless it’s truly vintage.
However, last week at a fundraiser dinner I did have someone come up out of the blue and simply ask “how long did you have to wait to get that watch?” I replied to him “2 days short of 2 years.” and he then complimented me on my white dial 116500 Daytona. We chatted a while about watches and he turned out a very nice guy. PS: Some of the poll answers are borderline creepy. |

I'm at DEN airport.. Lets see if I can get a photo.. Wasn't my vote, but I do have 2 hours to waste here..
Edit: it's really hard to get a good photo when casually walking by.. Edit2: My eyes really suck. Maybe a pilot walking by is a good choice.. Edit3: I got a submariner! But this is a difficult job.. The quality is no good.. Last edited by kalo925; 22 May 2018 at 10:12 AM.. Reason: https://image.ibb.co/ibMK6T/IMG_20180521_180545.jpg |

Last night I was down the street listening to some music at a very local watering hole. Someone had what looked like a Sub Date on but after some scrutiny it was clear from the PCLs and dial insignia that it was an Invicta. I held off commenting as I neither wanted to talk to the guy or let him know I felt his watch was a knock-off.

somewhere between 1 and 3.
If just in passing, probably just pretend I didn't notice. If like sitting somewhere, like at a restaurant, I'll probably take a few looks to see what model other details. If it's someone I'm working with and having a conversation with anyways, I might slip in a "nice watch", but that is very rare. |

It depends on the situation. More than often I’ll stare, try to see what model it is and be on my way.

I don't say "nice watch" because it's almost impossible to tell if it's a fake when they're just walking by. If I knew for a fact it was real, then I'd definitely say "nice watch"
