DSOTM Chipped....another case found....Should we still buy???

Found another case of chipping on the beloved Omega Ceramic Dark Side of the Moon!

What is going on with these chipping cases?

Does anyone have chips on their watches? Feel Free to post here...

We shouldn't be subject to a faulty material if there are more widespread cases out there. If we see more damages, we should make a complaint to Omega and remedy this.

This person was selling their DSOTM for $5650 shipped/insured, I'm sure at a loss due to damage....not sure if it was negligence or faulty material.....Let me know what you guys think.

How does a chip show up at that location on the watch? Isn't that on the palm facing side? I admit some interest with this as I recently purchased a Big Blue.. so far, not even a scratch.

this is the first case I have heard of a DSOTM, not saying its not possible, but to extrapolate that this is a recurring theme affect omega QC or DSOTM at large, is a bit premature

Not a problem, I have been keeping my eye on all ceramic watches being produced and their tendency to chipping.

Currently Omega is coming up more frequently, mainly because their Ceramic Moon's are more popular then the other ceramic watches being produced. AP uses big ceramic bezels haven't seen a complaint there, IWC Pilot Ceramic, Panerai makes a Radiomir ceramic, not sure of anymore....im sure there are more brands making ceramic cased watches.

And heck if they are prone to damage Omega should drop prices to offset that and offer a replacement if it happens.

The material is called Zirconium Dioxide, widely used in dental veneers. The fail rate of dental ZrO2 is low but still happens. Watch materials would be better more malleable, for unexpected impacts. Unfortunately ZrO2 is more brittle hence the chipping seen.

The material is extremely hard - and therefore much less susceptible to scratches. However it's also less ductile (more brittle) then steel, so more prone to chipping or shattering (under serious impact).

I'm sure someone can add the more technical details, but similar to sapphire crystals vs acrylic.

But these things get banged and a dinged bezel is one thing but I'd cringe at the thought of a crack or worse in the "body" of the watch. Just doesn't seem worth it.

The look is nice. But durability--that's the key for me.

So you've found a couple of watches chipped compared to the amount that's sold, you don't know how they've been damaged whether they've been hit or dropped and you question should we still buy them.

I've had my DSOM over 3 years, It gets worn every day whether its using a chain saw, digging holes or driving my lorry. Its not chipped, damaged or fallen apart and when its thrown in the sink and cleaned it comes out like new.

Now my Knees and Back are sore with work should i just sit and not move in case I damage them or just give up work altogether?

Of course its possible, even probable that's the nature of the Material. Ceramic cased sports watches are a head scratcher. IWC chipped, panerai chipped they will all chip

I have owned several GSOTM watches over the last few years and had no issues. I have read about issues with ceramic but it very much seems like the exception and not the rule. I would not but a damaged ceramic watch.
