Tokyo Watch Shopping Today and checking out SD 116600

Visited multiple pre-owned watch dealers here in Nakano Tokyo today with my son and family! There were tons of Rolex SS sports models for sales but there were no deals to be found.

JackRoads had one SD 116600, but it was reserved for purchase until tomorrow at $11,400 US. There were 6 examples for sale in TWC, each for $14,000 US , and then there was one example just sold as I was standing there!!!

Yeah yeah, I know... doesn’t mean they are going to sell for the $14,000 US but is that nuts or what?!

Prices are a little more expensive here in Tokyo. Daytonas were in the upper 20’s, Subs date models in the high 9’s, etc. There were really no deals to be found.

Yeah I’m pretty sure most others noted the same thing. Tokyo seems to be a horrible place to buy Rolex right now.

It's been a long time since Tokyo or Japan in general was cheap. Nothing there is cheap. Wages are high, land is precious. Even when I used to go there on business in the late '90s if I wanted to buy cheap electronics I was better off in the states.

Tokyo used to be the place to buy Rolex on the cheaper side due to more discount and tax refund. Now the internet age has changed this and its all sky high prices. I just went this past April and I was surprised how expensive the watches are. HK and TW has better pricing now.

Pricing is simply rising to meet demand.

Has anyone stopped to consider that this is the defacto price increase that Rolex SA does not have to issue? Let the lack of supply cause prices to equalize?

Or looking at this another way, have Rolex watches been under priced for far too long? I believe so, yes.

Hey, if you dont mind can you PM me second hand watch shops in Taiwan. Was in Tokyo last month and I completely wrote off purchasing in Asia after the shocking secondary market prices. Will be in Taiwan later this year and wouldnt mind checking it out.

It is easy to find any sought after modern or vintage Rolex model in Tokyo but just not at a good price anymore. I still have fond memories of buying my late 70s full set 1016 in Tokyo a few years ago for not much higher than usd7000. There are many serious collectors in Japan and the strengthening economy has fueled the big price increases. I think Hong Kong is now a better place for vintage Rolex now so long as you do your homework.
