Patek 3800 Robbed

Hello Everyone,

I had a very bad day yesterday and i wanted to share it with you. My patek 3800 got robbed in Paris, France during a sale. The worst is that i just got the watch back from service form Patek, I have been waiting for this one more than 6 months and all the work, money and time vanished in matter of second.

Also my inssurance doesn't cover it since it was not in US and it was my partner in France who was selling it, not me.

If any of you see it for sale somewhere please le me know.

Ref : Patek 3800/1JA-001
Case Number : 2875774
Movement number : 1428805

Thank you for the kind words.

The guy run away with the watch while my partner was counting the money and not paying attention to him. It has been found that all the bills were fake.

Jesus. Sorry to hear. A cash transaction is always something to be treated with care - which is why you should always do it in a bank etc. I know this doesn't help now but maybe will in the future.

I know, I always did mine in a bank booth in witch it would have been very hard for the person to run away and even if he would have tried, he would have been stop by the security guard and the security lock at the entrance of the bank....

And this is going to make them very little money at the end I think.

If was selling the watch to a reseller he would have offered me 11k€. Fake bills cost around 20%, so 3000€. I read that black market for stolen watches is like 40-50%, so 5000€. Patek 3800 are not commun so very hard to sell on black market.

So they’ll make, between 1-2k euros. What a joke !!

Absolutely sickening. Sorry this has happened to your partner. Can I ask how and where the watch was advertised? A dedicated watch forum or equivalent to Craigslist?

Where did this all take place? Public location? Could there be CC cameras in the area that might have recorded the perpetrator? Do you have the contact info/phone number of the buyer? Was the buyers ID checked? References? Any red flags that might have forewarned what went down?

It really is the Wild West out there. I hope you have reported this to the police and provided all the information that might locate the thief. This is probably more common than we might think. Sellers have met with prospective buyers at Starbucks in SoCal and then suddenly run to a waiting accomplice in a car. Those sellers were targeted via Craigslist ads.

Sorry to hear of the theft. We have similar problems in US with CL sales of things as cheap as a cellphone all the way up to Rolexes.

Not sure location is relevant.

Yes, the watch was listed on Leboncoin, something similar to Craigslist.

The sale was inside a coffee next to the train station. All the elements he had, name, phone, etc was reported to the police.

Also the « buyer » call back my partner to threat him to kill him if he was going to the police. So maybe he is scared to be easily caught with the infos we have. We’ll see...

How well do you know your partner? Are you sure he was in fact robbed? Either way, I’m very sorry. This is a terrible situation.
