Sent my 1979 Submariner to Rolex to be serviced. I knew the acrylic needed to be replaced and the crown wasn't working correctly. However, they came back and said I also needed to replace the bezel and dial because it lost its luminescent. I am not sure I want replace anything on this watch. However, Rolex is telling me they have to change the disk and swap out the bezel for a new one before they can pressure test it. But I can keep the dial if I want to. Is this true? Will the value of the watch go down if I replace the bezel? Thanks for the help.

Bezel rotates inside/around a crystal's "retaining ring".

The retaining ring presses the crystal against the case's shoulder, making the Oyster case capable of withstanding high pressures without any leakages.

Maybe if the combo retaining ring and bezel are gone they'll need to replace both.

So you get to keep your original dial?
How much is the charge for the replacement parts?

I believe the bezel assembly is packaged as three parts as mentioned above (bezel, insert and retaining ring)

Will they not let you keep the original insert as well?

You could always sent it to an independent watchmaker.

Depending on the issue with the crown... it could be a fairly inexpensive fix... especially if it just needs the stem replaced... I would take it to an independent watchmaker... a crystal is not hard to source...

Well if ur question is about the bezel assembly, then no, it won’t effect value. Actually it will enhance the watch appearance. But if they also replace the insert, then yes it will effect value, the original one should still be a fat font one, which is very expensive to replace. If you can keep the dial and the insert, assuming they are original to the watch in the first place, u r good to go. Personally, I wouldn’t mind replacement crystal and crown on a watch such as yours, since it’s necessary for sealant.

Never send a vintage watch to Rolex, Omega,etc...
Pay the return shipping, and take to a vintage specialist, they will be sympathetic to vintage watches.

X2 Check the list of vintage repairers on the Forum and send it to one of them!

I know this thread is repeated - but another option is get them to replace the bezel anyway but make sure they send you the old one and insert too - that way you can swap it back yourself or keep it for the next owner - you may want to damage the new bezel instead of keep damaging the old one....

I also have a Sub (1680) that's from late 1979/1980 and it has a minor crown issue as well. There is no way I will even consider sending it to a Rolex for that type of work for those very reasons.
