Myself like both but prefer a manual wind somehow winding a watch each day make you part of it.

Honestly it has more to do with what do you prefer? Do you need a date function? If so then you need to get an auto. I have found that I don't even need a seconds function so my two BASE 112 and 210 manual winds work great for me. I actually wind both watches every morning and love doing it, like Padi says, you feel a bit more "involved" or closer to your watch.

I also have a 162 which is an auto, so neither is better or worse, just different.

If you could please, give a little more detail in what you are looking for in a watch or more specifically, a Pannie.

For me, I prefer the historical line. But there are some contemporary ones I like too. How's that for a fence ride?

I would only buy the models that appeal to me. Some might be auto, and some might be manual. Of the current Panerai line, there are really only two that I like: The "8 Days" (190?) and the big old-fashioned looking one, (203 maybe?). In any case, it doesn't matter to me which category they belong to.

BTW, I think I'm going to try to sell my remaining Panerai again. It's a PAM 87 (Submersible 1000m).

Historicals come with a seconds counter... the PAM111, the 113 and the 118, and the destro versions of them, plus the Radiomir 183 and of course the 8 Days.
