Ceramic Daytona to a gold piece?

I bought a 116500 black dial last year, for a premium over retail. I wanted the watch and I knew I wouldn't be able to get one from an AD any time soon (not a big purchase history). So I paid extra for it, and it's been great to own and wear.

Recently though, since the prices have gone so high on the secondary market for all these sports models... I'm thinking it now makes more sense to even contemplate trading up to a precious metal piece. I wouldn't have really thought about that before until I acquired by Daytona C.

I really like the Daytona, but to be honest I haven't yet had the pure visceral feeling about it that I've had in the past with other watches. For example, my Panerai 372, Speedy Pro, or the 116610 Sub that I had and sold.

What do you all think... is it worth it to sell a Daytona C in this market, to use the funds towards a full gold (sub or daytona)?

I also realize many people are waiting for a 116500 for a long time. I bought mine for a premium, but the current market prices mean even I could do better than I got into it at. I know, it's all insane these days.

But would anyone here let go of a 116500 to get to a full gold Rolex? Or would you just hold and see what happens with this crazy market.

If it doesn’t sing go ahead and move it on. It’s just another watch! I sold one for an AP once. Then bought it back at a premium. Who cares because I also sold at a premium. Makes no difference.

You can get the best deal for your 116500 to fund your Daytona PM. There are many models out there i.e. with Oysterflex or full gold bracelet.

If you bought it second-hand for a premium and your name isn't on the warranty card then I don't see what there is to worry about here. Others are waiting to buy at MSRP and (I would hope) get their name on the card and keep the watch. Your situation didn't deny anyone of that.

You aren't a flipper if you bought it second-hand, decided you didn't like it and are selling it later. Any increase in value during that time is inconsequential.

If the watch no longer speaks to you then move it along towards getting what you want. No harm in that.

i was in exactly the same boat as you. I bought mine at premium, but small premium only as I was able to hop aboard the bandwagon before the hype blew out of proportion. When I saw the 116519LN, i just couldn't resist the thought of having a chance to own a PM daytona by selling the 116500LN at premium and add just a bit more. From retail price, the difference is more than double even for the oysterflex models. but given i was able to sell the 116500 at very good price, then buy the 116519LN just slightly below retail price, i pulled the trigger.

I have to admit, I miss the white dial 116500, it is certainly a beauty, but it is no match to the 519LN

PM is very alluring, I would acquiesce to that desire and take advantage of the Daytona's price.

I would explore the market and see what the TS have available that would interest you. The deal will be made when you see what you can get for your Daytona-C. I would think that you are going to be 3-5K short at the best. Not enough to stop the deal but enough to know you spent the money. If you should want to flip the PM you will get your feelings hurt on the difference in what you gave to what the flip value is unless it is a very hot model. Good luck and go for it.

In your shoes I would personally sell that Daytona for a WG Pepsi on black dial.
The Daytona does nothing for me at all - too complicated and fussy.

No PM Daytonas on bracelet are offered with CE bezels (except the Platona) so an easy pass for Me. Stay with the SS Version

I did exactly that. Paid a premium for a white dial 500 and sold it 8 months later for the 519 on OF. Couldn’t be happier. Sell it now while it’s still hot, although I have a feeling it’s going to hot for years to come.

Yea, if you can get out of it, do it. But don't go all out on a big yellow gold watch if its your only one.

Yes. Would and did.

Couldn't decide between these two though, so...did the TRF thing.

If you already paid a premium for it, will you actually make money on this?

If you can, I don't see why not. the PM pieces price has gone up a bit, too I think.

I would totally do a trade up for the WG Daytona on bracelet. Just make sure you try it on first and see how you like it because if you sell your SS and decide you miss it too much, sourcing one at retail is going to be harder than finding a PM version... Good luck in your decision!

I would consider trading for a PM GMT or Sub, but wait on a PM Daytona until there are ceramic bezels unless you go platinum.

For me, I've found out that I only like watches with ceramic bezels and on Oyster bracelets.

One of the next watches I'm considering is the black dial Daytona. Figure I'll wear it until I'm able to finally get that platinum Daytona down the road.

Good luck with the decision!

Age has nothing to do with choice of watch metal. That is a stereotype. Old geezers wear YG watches and young folks wear SS. C'mon man. The average age of a Cadillac owner used to be 76 years old. I see plenty of younger folks driving Caddies. Also see plenty of younger folks here wearing gold.

My first watch was a PM Daytona and I absolutely love it. Every morning when I put it on, I stare at it, amazed at how beautiful it is. The weight of a PM Daytona is intoxicating. I let a friend who owns a SS DJ try on my Daytona. The first words out of his mouth were “When I purchased my Rolex, it was the heaviest watch I had ever held... but your Daytona is amazing!”

Do it.
