Twenty years from now.....

The scarcity of sports S/S references with metal bezels is going to make all you young folk driving up the prices on these mass produced models with ceramic bezels feel a bit foolish. I can see it now. I should have bought that 16700 Pepsi when it was only $6000. Maybe my almost 60 years is showing but I fondly remember when an AD had to cultivate a relationship with the buyer, not the insanity that is going on today. But this to will pass. Just my humble opinion.

20 years from now, watch collecting may be consigned to the annals of history, much like stamp collecting

Interesting thought.
I do prefer the ceramic bezel for everyday wear, as it doesn’t scratch.
But a vintage for special times is appealing

20 years from now, the millennial is going to take over....and they prefer iwatch. Most kids today don't care about Rolex.

For luxury watch, well who knows.....maybe they'll be buried with all of us and be worthless LOL

I think 20 years is when some of the names now should finally come up on the current waiting list.

I think people may lust after non digital things more and more in an omni present digital world.

Look at how vinyl has made a comeback over digital music, especially with the young uns.

I just got my 116710LN back from RSC today. As I was opening the box, my 5 year-old yells, "Rolex! I love Rolex." So......there is hope.

I agree with this. I don't think mechanical watches are going anywhere anytime soon. Certainly not in the next 20 years.

$10K today was worth $6500 20 years ago. I bet 20 years from now, the brand will still be revered and when $10K inflates to $15K, people will lament "remember when you could buy a Rolex for $10K?!"

Perhaps.... but, even then, I’ll still rather wear a 6-digit ceramic model.

I totally agree! The Applewatch has introduced the next generation to wearing something on their wrist. I think 20 years out we’ll still see mechanical watches being produced and highly sought after, but with fewer brands to choose.

As for the OP’s statement about 5 digit sport watches, I agree, grab’em while you can afford them.

I doubt I'd be wearing a watch everyday in twenty years. It would still be nice to have but not relevant anymore.

Come to think of it, it's not really relevant today.

In 20 years the kids of today will be mature adults, which means they will have better things to do than hang out on watch forums arguing the minutiae of mechanical timepieces... I see an end to the watch forum as we know it...

I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. The five digit models were also mass produced. It's all relative, the number of ceramic bezeled watches produced today is similar to the numbers produced twenty years ago when you factor in population growth. The price is also relative based on inflation and income growth.
We also live in a digital age. No one is driving prices anywhere really. There is just more demand because people are able to "know" more because of technology(social media)...
And in twenty-thirty years people will likely clamor and want these early six digits because they were the first generation to feature ceramics and now(the future) Rolex is using some new material made possible by new technologies.

It's all relative, with all due respect, I think it's just your age showing as you said. It's not just bezels and patina that makes something collectible, have to think outside the box a little.

I agree 100%, gimme a modern Rolex any day. Vintage has it's charm for sure, but I honestly would chose a Platona over some vintage $300k or whatever PN.

Rolex makes almost 1mm watches per year
It makes 100000s of ss watches
Probably 10000s of subs per year

One year we will all wake up to a crushing quantity of the samey watches on sale second hand (I rate Explorer II much higher over sub - just to back up the bezel qu :) ) and their value will crash

Higher interest rates, China recession, over supply of watches, its just around the corner ...

All the people who bought just for second hand value and not because they really sang with the watch will be crying

IMHO

There are some wealthy young lads at a gym I go to.
They are late teens/early twenties and come from very privileged backgrounds.

Apparently, their sole topics of conversation (according to a friend who can't stand them) are girls, cars, sport, watches and getting wrecked.

They are completely materialistic and quality watches are very on their radar.
