5990 vs Datograph vs 5170G
At the same price, what's your pick?
I love the versatility and wearability of the 5990 along with the Travel Time function, but the Datograph movement's beauty is just simply a cut above. I'd say the same for the 5170G, but the Datograph edges it out slightly for me. Only con of the latter two are they are less versatile and less fitting for my casual style. I'd have made the 5170P the third option, and that would make it a much harder choice for me when compared to the Datograph, but it seems to be about $20-25K more than the Datograph or 5990. |

5170P's are now available for less than £60k, similar Dato u/d would be £50k, I think at £10k difference the 5170P edges pretty well anything. 5170G is also a beauty and much more wearable than the Dato. http://watchesbysjx.com/2015/04/up-c...tos-price.html Dato movement is gorgeous but if I don't want to wear it because it is too large then it doesn't really matter how wonderful the movement is. |

D) None of the above
-5990 wears big on small wrists like mine and yours and the dressier pieces on leather bands you will grow tired of. Chrono Bleu is one of the most versatile pieces on leather and you have that box checked. Focus on adding the SS Pepsi to your awesome collection

5170p - the Lange is simply too large / chunky. I only love the “idea” of owning one, not wearing one
I felt the 5990 was too large for my 6.5 |

With my collection I'd get the Dato, after seeing the backs of the Dato and the 5170 together in Wempe one fine afternoon I couldn't get the PP first now. Just wish the 41mm U/D had Romans on the dial, would have bought one years ago.

5170G would be my pick. I really like that watch. Had the chance to get one off a member for a great price but had to pass as I had other incomings. It will always be on my short list.
That said, the Dato has been on your list so maybe time to scratch and find out. A flip never killed anyone lol

I do agree however that the Datograph is quite thick, and your point that while it may be nice to look at, it's not the best in terms of wearability which may defeat the purpose. Quote:

I too, prefer the roman indices on the Datograph over the lume indices after having seen them in person. The struggle I have is that while the Datograph looks nicer on the back, the 5170 is more elegant and wearable overall. |

Interesting poll as I was just thinking about trading my 5170G for a dato. In the end I decided against it. Although the dato movement looks better, the watch is overall way thicker and not as easy to wear. In addition, I think the 5170G will good value better over time.

5990 too grey for me. Datograph has a beautiful movement but you can't wear it upside down and still tell the time. 5170G nice, slim and classic but I will choose 5170p above all these despite the higher price premium. Just dazzling irl.

I've have/had all three. Had the original datograph which is the one to get. The u/d is too large and thick. At least the original was 39mm and wore a little better however still top
heavy with a relatively thick case. The 5170 wore much better and more balanced. I do give a notch to the dato movement as it looks better. |

5990. Its the only sports watch in the lineup plus it can be dressed up. Love the Dato but would never have it instead of a 5990. 5170 is too small and dressy for me. I like the watch in principle but there is zero chance ill ever own one.

The 5990 is indeed the most versatile of the three. I've worn it with business formal attire to shorts and flip flops. Wouldn't do that to either of the other two. I get the impression I like those two more on paper and admiring the caseback, than I would actually wearing them.

5990 for me. I let my Dato go this year since it wasn’t getting wrist time. I almost bought a 5170 last year but I knew it wouldn’t get much wrist time. I just enjoy watches with breacelet more.

My 2-cents: Save longer (or flip something) and get the 5170p. From your comments above, it seems it’s the one you like the most. I’ve learned that buying incrementally to the watch I really want is quite expensive, and painful. If the 5170p is the one you really want, just do it.
P.S. At 39.4mm, it wears perfectly. . .

From your list, I´d pick the 5170G, preferably with the black dial.
However, after looking at Stephen´s photo you´ll end up buying a 5170P anyway. |

The Nautilus is a totally different watch than the other two, so you really need to decide if you want a dressy sports watch or a sporty dress watch.
To me the Datograph is easily the nicest of the three but it is pretty thick and top heavy in platinum. I also prefer the original version to the new one. Have you considered the Lange 1815 Chronograph? It's basically the Datograph without the date and the new white gold version with the black dial looks a lot like the Datograph in platinum but is more attractive to my eyes, although I do prefer platinum to white gold. It's quite a bit thinner, a bit smaller, and, of course, gold is lighter than platinum. This is a nice comparison of the Lange versus the Patek: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRf7a_wM5Dc |
