Patek 5800 vs. 7118
Hi,
I'm looking to buy a watch for my husband and I'd appreciate your advice. He has a 6.5 inch wrist, so I thought a Patek 5800 might be perfect. But then I saw that Patek currently sells a "ladies" watch, model 7118, that seems to be basically the same size and appearance as the vintage 5800, but much cheaper. Am I missing something? I doubt he'd feel comfortable wearing a "ladies" watch. But wouldn't it be dumb to pay thousands of dollars more for the same watch in vintage? Please advise. |

The 5800 is marketed as a men's watch while the 7118 is marketed as a ladies' watch by Patek.
The 5800 commands a premium because it's a men's nautilus and it has already stopped production. |

7118 is like 35mm, I think that would still be too small on even a 6.5" wrist.

The 5800 also has "an approximate diameter of 35.0mm (from 10 to 4)." So that is what I don't understand -- they're both virtually the same size, yet one goes for multiples of the other. Are there any real differences besides marketing?

If your husband doesn't mind wearing a ladies' watch, then by all means go ahead and get the 7118 for him.
Personally if I get a ladies' watch as a gift from my wife, I will flip it and buy a men's watch. That's me. |

Patek 5800 vs. 7118
Quote:
5800 is over 38mm but I get what you mean with the 10-4 measurement. The 7118 is smaller however and they do not share the same movement. Date window is in a different spot as well, much prefer 3 to the 6 on the 7118. I wouldn't do it. If my wife bought me that, I would do as above and flip it and that would be an awkward situation to say the least. Unless you know he would actually love it prior to buying it for him, I would advise against it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Definitely, of those two, the 5800. It is larger than the 3800, which, at 37mm, was marketed as a men's watch when it was produced. The entire dial layout of the 7118 is different than the 5800/5711/3700 and the 7118 is marketed as a woman's watch. If you can swing it financially, the 5800 at 38.5mm is the perfect smaller version of the 5711 and it is a rare watch which was only produced for about a year.

Nothing wrong with a man wearing a 7118, there are many that do! Great piece. 7234R is another ladies piece man will/do wear.

Thank you all for your feedback and for pointing out some of the differences between the 5800 and 7118 (different date position, hands and five minute markers are more delicate, "12" instead of two lines, etc.) No 7118 for him, lol.

No one has mentioned the waves or the curves on the dial of the 7118. IMO that is what makes it a ladies watch and not a men's watch.
AFAIK the 5800 preowned price is close to that of the 5711/1A. Much smaller production numbers as it was only produced for 1-2 years. If you want a less expensive Nautilus, look at the 3800/1A, which is about 1mm smaller than the 5800. |
