5170P vs. 5070P

Interesting article comparing these platinum chronographs:

https://quillandpad.com/2018/07/28/h...a60b-169999865

Looks-wise, I like everything about the 5170P better: the smaller diameter, the narrower bezel, the less busy dial, the baguettes over the Breguets, the size of the movement. But mainly the larger looking, less crowded dial. That said, I'd be happy to wear either one.

I prefer 5170P. It's sleeker and more wearable. In person just gorgeous.

5070P very nice as well. The main advantage of the 5070P is that it holds value. .

I have and love the 5170p, but still prefer the 5070p. It’s twice the price though

Nice write up, comparing these two watches without being too biased one way or another.

I have tried both of these watches and they are both nice watches. For my wrist, the 5070P is a bit large. The dial seem a bit crowded and the movement side has a lot of empty space covered by the case. However the blue dial is quite nice, more uniform than the 5170P, which has a more gradated blue dial. Actually the blue dials on both of these watches are quite nice, each in their own way. However the 5170P dial seem more balanced in terms of layout and the movement is the right size for the case.

At the end of the day, those who are more focused on price appreciation will lean towards the 5070P. Those who appreciate the fine workmanship of a Patek in-house chrono movement with a more balanced dial layout, will lean towards the 5170P, especially at the more "reasonable" price point of under $100k USD.

Crazy to think delta is 100% difference now. One could argue that bridge will increase over the next decade.... we shall see. Be well!

Aesthetically I like the 5170P a lot more. Both amazing pieces in their own right.

Same for me. 5070 just reminds me of my grandfather's clock too much.

I much prefer the 5170 to the 5070 across the board. If the 5070 was not produced in such small numbers we wouldn’t be having this conversation...but it was and that’s the way it is.

I also prefer 5170P. I agree with you on the production run.

5170P to wear for me, 5070P to be stashed in the safe.

To me the 5170p clearly trumps the 5070p in so many ways (Patek's first true in house chronograph generation, distinct/perfect/subtle diamond baguetts on a cleaner dial, the wearability in size overall for smaller wrists etc.....I can go on but there's no point and nothing people that's seen the watch don't now).

Rareness is one thing but I primarily buy watches to enjoy and wear.....that would definitely be the 5170p.

Yeah, it's funny to me that in-house Patek movements seems to equate with potentially limitless supply and therefor less collectibility. I get it from a numbers' perspective, but it just seems wrong.

Limitless supply - I'm not sure that is correct. My AD can get one per year.

Right. That's the thing I don't get. A Patek-produced movement should be "better" than one produced by someone else, and it's not like they are going to make a million of them. But the non-inhouse movement watches seem to do better in the aftermarket. Am I wrong about this? What is better about the 5070 vs. the 5170? I believe only perceived (or actual) supply.

Aesthetics aside (all personal and yes I personally prefer the 5070 by a mile in terms of case, dial and movement finishing), production numbers is a big consideration.

When Patek chrono movements were made by Valjoux and lemania, two fairly small companies, they could only deliver so many base movements to Patek per year (250 per year for the 5070). When Patek internalized all movement manufacturing (an expensive thing to do and hence a need/desire to recoup that investment) there was no limit to how many they could make and many speculate that many more 5170s have been made as compared to 5070s and same goes for 5270 vs 5970 and same for 5204 vs 5004 etc.

That being said I think 5170s are very attractive and super wearable/comfortable watches. Will they be as “collectible” (whatever we think that term means) as their valjoux and lemania based predecessors? No, Probably not but not everyone has the same objective in buying and owning a particular watch. Best.

Ideally I’d want something in between the 5070 and 5170.

I’d want the sub dials aligned at the 9-3 axis. I’d want the stepped case. I’d want the 39mm size. I’d want the movement to be in house and fit the case. Oh and I’d like breguets.
