Icon20 Day Date 40 or Gold Submariner

Hi everyone!
So I have a interesting situation that I figured I’d take to the forums for advice from all of you wonderful people.
Currently I own A DateJust2 in steel and a ceramic Submariner date in steel. I am considering trading both in to get one watch but can’t decide if it’s a good decision number one or which watch to get. The reason I am Considering trading is because unfortunately I am Allergic to the steel Rolex uses. It give me a rash around my wrist. So I figured The best thing to do would be to get all gold. Great excuse to wear an all gold right. The two watches I am Between are the Day Date 40 in yellow gold or the all gold Submariner. They are essentially the all gold versions of my current watches. I also Love the White gold Daytona on oysterflex but I feel A little silly getting that watch when for the same price I can Have an all gold. People say to consider other steel brand watches like AP which I may Not be allergic to because of the different steel mix but there’s a risk number one that I may Be allergic and number two I just Like Rolex more.
So besides choosing between those watches I am Conflicted because then I will Only own a gold watch. Eventually I could Get another watch but it would be this one for a while and I’m worried it might be a little flashy. Any input with what you think I should consider with my collection?
Thank you so much and sorry for the long post!

They are both an excellent choice. I guess for me it would depend on which watch is more suitable for my lifestyle. I am casual most of the time, so sports models are my go to. Pick the one that resonates with you more

I like the DD40 primarily because of the president bracelet.

You have one Datejust II and one Sub now. The Day-Date is most similar to the Datejust and the gold sub, well it is most similar to the Sub.

So of your Datejust and Sub what one do you like the most and wear the most?

If the Datejust I would go for Day-Date, if the Sub I would go for the Sub.

However if you think yellow gold is too flashy, I would go for white gold or platinum.

It’s unfortunate that you are allergic to steel. Both of your gold choices are flashy, if I had to pick one it would be the Sub, but I prefer a sports watch as a daily.

If you're worried about being flashy and you're allergic to Rolex steel, you should go with a white gold model. A yellow gold Rolex is a flashy watch no matter how you slice it. Not necessarily a bad thing but I think that's just reality.

White gold day-date with blue, black, or white dial
Sub Smurf

Would be my choices if I were in your shoes. But if you don't love any of these watches then you should just wait and find something you love. It's a lot of coin to spend on something you may not bond with.

Only the DD is available in platinum, not the Sub. And it is what? 50K
He wants to trade his 2 pieces. He would be far short in trade in value.
I wear YG and it is no flashier than the guys wearing huge sized gold toned Michael Kors style watches. Frankly nobody notices nor knows what is on my wrist, and they certainly don't know it's cost.

People can have a skin sensitivity to stainless steel due to reactions of the skin/secretions/sweat interacting to the alloys in the metal. Unfortunately, the issue that is irritating your skin with a stainless steel watch, may still be present with an 18K gold watch that still is made up of other metals in alloy.

Before you go make watch changes, I'd check in with a dermatologist or allergist to make sure there isn't some other factor in play here.

Just my 2 cents from a medical standpoint.

From a watch standpoint, my favorite daily wearer is a Submariner 116618 LN. It can go anywhere with me and always look and feel great!

:)

If I would be in your situation, I would take DD. The bracelet, overall feeling of DD is something very different if you compare DD to your soon to be gone -watches.
All gold Sub—can’t go wrong with that either!! Only good options!

Yup. I have the LB. The YG LN, LB or WG Subs are win win. Pick your choice, can't go wrong.

I far prefer the DD. If I consolidated to one gold watch, it would be the WG DD, either blue or green dial. Hard to go wrong with the YG DD though.

I never said the Sub comes in platinum, only that if yellow gold is too flashy he can consider platinum or white gold.

OP said he is trading in his 2 pieces because he is allergic to them. I did not get that he did it because money where an issue too. Also he mentioned Daytona in white gold, that is not considered a cheap watch either.

So from the information I have, Op could very well consider a white gold Sub or a white gold or platinum Day-Date if he thinks yellow gold is too flashy.

Also no matter if it is a huge sized gold toned Michael Kors style watches or a Rolex Day-Date or sub I would not personally either wear yellow gold because I too find it too flashy for myself. Platinum or White gold is more stealth in my mind. But that is just taste and preference.

I was in the same situation and my advise is to pick either as you will have both! With mine, they have almost equal wrist time!

Pick the one that suits your lifestyle the best. If you don't like bling, DD and Sub are both are available in white gold as well as the Daytona. No bad choices here.

Agreed. Taste in PM metal color is subjective. Personally I want a PM gold watch in YG, as that is it's natural color and outside during dusk hours it emanates a beautiful glow, which white metals can't do.

i think people over think how flashy YG watches are. i feel like when you're outside most people don't notice or don't care. its just the fact that as a WIS if you see a YG rolex/AP/patek/etc you'll be freaking out because its easy for us to identify what it is and how much it costs, but for the general public its completely different, especially with the amount of gold plated watches that are in right now

with that said i'm not a fan of WG so my preference is YG/RG. i suggest getting what you really like even if you think its too flashy because in the end you'll regret not getting what you want pretty fast

YG Blue Submariner... Dressy, sporty , casual and
who cares if it’s too flashy ... No more flashy than
your current DJ or Sub . They’re all Rolex and no one
will notice , just sayin ... Enjoy !!!

With the added weigh of PM would either be more comfortable?

Also the Sub has the adjustability...

Nice choice to be in

I join the people who say depends on your daily wear.
I you wear mostly suits and ties then the day date is the one for you.
If you wear jeans and polos most of the time then go for the sub.
This of course is a general guideline. You should wear what makes you happy. Try them both of and the one that gives you butterflies go with that.

I'm biased of course cause I have a vintage YG day date so yeah...

I think DD is the more classic choice.

Pt if budgets stretch to it, or WG /YG to suit otherwise. I particularly like the WG and Olive dial configuration DD

If I were to have a one and only I'd go for a white gold DD40 because the platinum model is too expensive. If you prefer YG I'd still say DD40. Another good thing for it being a one watch only is you won't constantly be resetting both complications.

^This.

But, having been diagnosed with a skin condition myself, I know this isn't an easy thing to resolve, and I would echo what another poster said about checking to see whether you might still have a problem with YG or WG bracelets as well.

My issue is strap comfort as much as what it's made of, and so I'm looking at chopping in my Sub for a RG 116655 YM on the Oysterflex.

Tried on a YG DD at Anchorage AD recently and a Blue Dial Y gold sub. Prior to going in to the store I was sure I would prefer the DD. I actually preferred the sub by a mile even before Nancy said the DD look confirmed I am approaching sixty. It does look a bit anachronistic. I would want the Black Dial sub.
