1675/16750 Luminova Matte Service Dial Q

Hi Team,

As I sit here admiring my new watch, especially the luminova service matte dial, I’ve a question: when one services a matte dialed 1675 or 16750, can one request a luminova matt service dial? I ask as I’m thinking about the history of my watch, and how I came to have this rather magnificent and practical dial.

I was aware of the existence of such dials, but had never seen one. I think they look absolutely fantastic as they keep to the theme of the original matte dial and avoid gold hour markers, but massively add to the functionality of the watch and hark back to the tool watch they would have been when first released (and with nice new tritium markers).

Gmtmaster1675.com has some interesting info on it. I believe it would depend on when it was serviced.

From what I've seen, 1675s will get a matte service dial where 16750s will get a gloss dial with gold surrounds. Reason being, 1675s never had gloss dials where later 16750s did.

The challenge is finding the dial. If you send your watch to RSC then they'll gladly swap it out but retain all of your original parts. Functionality is gained at the loss of value.

Rolex USA also stopped supplying dials to independent watchmakers with Rolex parts accounts. They might still sell them to ADs with in-house Rolex-trained watchmakers. Whether or not they still require old parts to be exchanged is unknown to me. It might be worth trying to find one in your area to ask.

Interesting stuff. Seems like from a practical point of view, if one ever needs to replace the dial and hands (which have been done in my case so the original parts are long gone), an RSC will put a matte dial with matching hands on the 1675.

Would this be correct?

16750 GMT matte service dials were made at some point and are very rare. I've only seen one on a watch a couple of times.

To the best of my knowledge that's correct. I've never seen a 1675 end up with anything but a matte tritium service dial before luminova was an option or a matte luminova service dial now that luminova is an option.

If you're okay with losing your current dial and hands then it would be worth calling either the NY or Dallas RSC to inquire about the above and confirm current parts policy on what you'd receive with the service.

Keep us posted on what you learn. I'm curious what they say.

Springer -- how could you tell the 16750 had a matte service dial? Was it different from the 16750 Mk1/Mk2.

To be honest it does look a bit off in some ways.. the writing and short coronet..

I naively believed that no one would go to trouble of faking a vintage 16750 dial..
