Consolidating collection (pic heavy)
I know these threads can annoy some people but I honestly would appreciate comments. Also, given this is a Rolex forum I expect some skewed responses but feel like there are plenty of knowledgeable people on here. I’m in the process of refreshing my collection and would appreciate any thoughts. I know at the end of the day it’s a personal decision but I like to bounce ideas of other knowledgeable peers.
I recently bought a Sd4k which I plan on having as my daily. I have a few other watches which I don’t wear too much, and likely will wear less now, so I am thinking of consolidating. I can get on a waitlist for a Patek through a dealer I have bought from in the past and am considering a 5711/5712 in blue or a 5726 in steel on leather. As that is likely a few years down the line and I would consolidate further at that point (probably just a Patek and the Sd4k) I need to bear in mind resale in this phase of the watch box trimming. In the medium term I want to have less pieces of higher quality. My nicest watch at the moment is a WG Daytona and that will almost certainly have to go if I got a Patek so am open to moving it on now to trade up. So, intermediate thoughts are to add something like: White VC 49510 (older Chrono). Looks like I can pick one up for 10-11k if I am patient. Feels to me like a Daytona but from a trinity brand (albeit none in house). A newer in house Chrono would be great but they are expensive (I could sell more watches I guess...) and they may make me reconsider the Patek? Feels like the 49150 is very good value vs the new model and other trinity pieces. [img]www.ibb.co/jAS81L[\img] White or blue VC 4500V. Grey market looks to be about 16-17k and I may be able to get a discount on a new one? Anyone had any success there? I like the simplicity and the changeable straps. Feels like a very versatile piece and is not seen in the wild very often but would get “the nod” from guys in the know. [img]https://ibb.co/e9kHvf[\img] [img]https://ibb.co/cjTsT0[\img] Perhaps an AP three hand model. Similar price to the VC I guess but I feel (in NYC) like these are the go-to piece for people who want “a nice watch” and are no always WIS. Guess that’s a result of the branding and advertising hook ups with celebs and does not detract from the fact AP are a great brand. I generally wear a shirt or polo shirt to work so not need a super formal watch. The WG Daytona (below) is plenty formal enough so I don’t need a dress watch even if the Daytona moves on. Currently I have (all have boxes and warranty cards): Speedmaster, approx year 2000. No bracelet and worn on a variety of straps. Likely I keep this long term as I guess it’s not worth much without the bracelet? Tudor black bay 79230N. Bought new. Almost certainly moving on in this reshuffle but I like that it is a short production run and is vintage looking. [img]https://ibb.co/gvWqFf[\img] Tag Monaco 24 racing. Bought new (wedding present to myself but the wife is ok with letting it go if I roll into something “better”). Love that it is unusual but it is pretty chunky and I’m not sure if I want more subtle pieces at this stage of my life. Sentimental value gives me a tinge of guilt but moving on, eventually to a PP for a keeper, seems justifiable. [img]https://ibb.co/gXajaf[\img] White gold Daytona 116519 white face with dark dials on leather. Bought pre owned to sort of commemorate a milestone (that was the excuse anyway...) but in reality it was because I always wanted a Daytona as a kid and the prices of the good steels (zenith) I had always wanted were not far off white gold! I like that it is unusual despite being a Daytona and the weight is nice. [img]https://ibb.co/esY4af[\img] Grand Seiko SBGA011 Snowflake. Pre rebranding model with the “Seiko” dial. Something I felt I always wanted, it’s a beautiful dial, and none WIS have no idea which I like. That said I barely wear it at the moment. Grand Seiko 20th SBGH267. Blue dial and amazing looking in the flesh. Bought on a whim but feels special. Again, flies beneath the radar to most people. [img]https://ibb.co/gci4af[\img] A Garmin watch for true sport. I.e. I won’t wear a nice watch for proper sports :) What would you keep? What would you move on? |

I’m not a huge fan of the Daytona but that said, yours is stunning. I have an intuition that you’d miss it. It also fits your work attire perfectly (I think it goes with everything).
I’m no expert on Patek but admire your collection and don’t think you need to apologize. You’re asking for opinions on a Rolex forum — that’s what we do! I do think fewer pieces of quality is generally the best approach but you’re already there. You have only quality pieces. Don’t sell something you love because you think you’re in love with something else (it happens to a lot of us). Perhaps try the Patek and if it is indeed a lifer for you, then start selling off the pieces in your collection you no longer wear? Sorry I can’t be more helpful. But thanks for sharing your thoughts and the beautiful pictures of your watches! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I had the decency to warn you at the start of the thread at least no harm no foul as at least you bumped my thread for others to see Jstan9, appreciate your thoughts and kind words. Those are not my actual watches, just internet pics as I am at work, but wanted to get this out there as it’s been gnawing at me |

I’d skip the VC and wait for the Patek. It’s a nice watch but no more impressive than your Daytona, AP or Pateks.
From strictly an appearance standpoint the Daytona, Nautilus, and RO are the most classic and timeless of shape/appearances ever made. You can’t go wrong. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Stage one complete. Tag and Tudor traded against this
Stage two is selling two old Gucci watches and a snowflake. Stage three at the moment I am thinking of not going the Patek route (5711 via a long wait...) and perhaps the 15400 (or 15300 depending how the sizes feel) in rose gold on leather in black. That’s for the future though as at the moment I can’t part with any of the current collection of five (for now) keepers and have spent enough on watches this year. |
