Laser Weld
Hello,
I have been reading up on watch repairs and wondering if it possible to tell if a watch has been laser welded? What do you look for? Are there any draw backs to having your case repaired with this method? Thanks! |

If it is done properly you cannot tell. Welding metal is a well known process.

The alternative grind down the case to meet the lowest point of the damage spot.

It might be possible to tell if you have a sufficiently advanced x-ray machine. I have friends in that business working on both detectors and x-ray sources. I lend a friend a couple of watches a few years ago for testing precision x-ray imaging of machines running. I have a movie somewhere of one of them with a sandwich dial. You can focus on different layers of the watch while the film is running and look at the dial, plates, sprockets. The 1675 was a bit harder to x-ray.
