Polishing paranoia
Hi everyone,
I recently picked up a 16700 Pepsi to complement my existing collection of a 14060M and 15200 Date. Unfortunately I find myself having second thoughts and wondering whether the case had been over-polished (particularly the lug above the crown). I purchased the watch with box and Rolex service papers in the mid 7s USD range. To the extent that it is indeed overpolished, I would consider trading up for a better example. What are your thoughts? Am I just being paranoid? Cheers! |

Pics are not clear, but the 5 o’clock lug looks thin

I can’t see the chamfers very well because your pics are blurry at the lugs, but doesn’t look overpolished to me. Look very decent and in fact a great deal for full set at mid 7k usd.
Don’t sweat over it. |

Not grossly over polished. Spring bars do not protrude which is a super indication that somebody went to town on it.
Considering what you paid, you did very well. Wear it and enjoy the hell out of it. |

Thanks everyone for the kind responses! It is great to get some reassurance from people who know what they are talking about.
In terms of spring bar protrusion, the one above the crown is basically flush with the lug on one side of the lug hole. This was not a full set unfortunately (just box and Rolex service papers). |

Better pictures would help, but it looks great, especially the top down shot at the end. You can see nice sharp edges. When they're poorly polished they kinda just blend the side of the case with the top and the lugs look like melted butter.
Polishing isn't a bad thing. Poor polishing is though. |

Good looking watch.
Rolex makes spring-bars with different lengths of pivots and so just looking at "spring bar protrusion" may not tell you much.

Really appreciating the comments - I suppose being overly pedantic is quite prevalent in this hobby! Adding a few more photos...

Looks good. One side of the lugs is always thinner than the other.

I dont know, looks like a great example to me at a great price. I see examples going for well north of 10 grand with box & papers.

Not a bad watch ..that will grace any wrist with style..nice buy
My only criticism is the last photo Your Mercedes hour hand is not right it should have 3 sender lines at 120 degrees like 3 spokes on a wheel ...yours looks like a bad fake It has a massive round spot in the middle of the wheel :-) well timed photo |

Thanks everyone! Your comments have helped me settle into the relationship.
Now, on to the next piece... Perhaps this warrants a new thread, but I am looking for another watch to round off my collection (14060m, 16700, 15200 and JLC Reverso Classique). Should I opt for a Moonwatch (hesalite, leather strap) or Rolex Explorer 1/2 or White dial Milgauss...? Thanks for any thoughts! |

I‘ve become suspicious, as well. At these price points, people will have companies refinish the cases, with new chamfers and everything. But thin is thin. That said, I second that you‘ve done well at 7k. So did I in the past, but sold and got myself doubt-free versions.
