Open Warranty Cards - How Do They Work?

When it comes to warranty cards, how do you know if an AD will honor an "open" card? Open = signed/stamped by an AD, but no original date of purchase is included on the card. I have heard that you can fill it in when you want so the warranty begins when you fill it out, but ADs I have spoken to say that isn't the case.

What's been your experience with open warranties?

Omega warranty cards are invalid unless they are stamped and dated by the AD at the time of purchase. If you bought this off the grey market it would be up to the discretion of the AD whether they want to date the card for you or not. My guess is they won't.

I've seen unauthorized dealers claim that you can date the warranty card yourself after a sale so long as it has the ADs stamp. While this does not adhere to Omega's official policy, my experience with their warranty is that they are pretty relaxed and likely don't do any investigation into the validity of the card. Every time I've sent in a watch for warranty work, I was simply able to email a photo of the card itself. One such time I had a warranty card from Rob Engstrom and their stamp is basically illegible. See attached photo and tell me if you can read that. Omega accepted the card without question.

My AD scans the card when I buy a watch. That is what activated the warranty from what I am told. You can write whatever you want on there but it won’t matter if it has been scanned.

Interesting. I've bought several new Omega's from ADs this year and none of the cards have any sort of magnetic strip or microchip.

I do know that Omega can use the serial number of a watch to find which AD the watch was originally sold to, but I don't know if they have any information beyond that.

No idea about Omega. I haven’t looked at my Speedy boxes/cards in years. I doubt Omega does this.

I was speaking of Rolex specifically. And I don’t recall if it was done with my Tudor pieces.

For what it's worth I bought a Tudor this year and their warranty cards have a magnetic strip.

I just don’t remember if my AD scanned those cards on my Tudors. I would think as Tudor moves to more allocation models, like Rolex, they would have to scan them to get credit for selling them and get more inventory shipped.

Bought my Tudor on Thursday and they indeed scanned it before writing in my information. I also heard them talking about the “Rolex” system which makes it pretty clear that both Rolex and Tudor use the same scanning machine/system.

Same for me. Instant registration with Rolex at the date of the sale.

It's the new process so get used to it.
