Icon20 No LOVE for the GMT II Two Tone SS YG??

I finally pulled the trigger on my first Rolex today. It was a fun, EXCITING and memorable experience at the AD.
Of course in the beginning I wanted the BLNR or dare I say even CHNR or BLRO?
But I quickly woke up to reality in the world of Rolex.
Then the 116713LN (SS YG 2 tone) caught my eye. I have to admit, in photos it didn’t really appeal to me. But IRL, it’s something different. And it’s undeniably Rolex. I actually wonder why this model isn’t more loved nor sought after, is it just me who appreciates the nostalgia of this iconic 80’s look? I don’t know. But when I showed my friends, they unanimously said the two tone wasn’t their cup of tea.

So, am I in the minority here in loving this model? Or is it just my friends (who are also Rolex fans) that have no love for the SSYG GMT?

And, multiple AD’s are claiming that since all the SS Pro watches are gone, clients are now starting to snatch up the two tones. What is everyone else’s experience? Will the 116713LN hold its value?

You will take a hit if you try and flip it immediatly but will hold its value long term. My first one I paid 4100 from a grey dealer, sold it for 4600 2 years later. I purchased one in 2017 for £7500. Made me wince a bit to pay the mark up, lesson identified to my self anyway. Is buy what you like and keep it unless something really important comes up.

Buy what you like and forget about value, I have had numerous two tones; when I have sold always sold for more than what I paid or broke even. Thats not a bad place to be in considering the enjoyment of the watch.

It will hold value better than before but then you won't get much of a discount now so there is not that much change from before the SS hype. Only real difference is that now you have to have more cash saved up to buy the watch in the first place.

You are in the minority...this watch just doesn’t have the fanfare or desire as many of the ss pieces. The good news is that it doesn’t matter! If you like it, enjoy it

I think it is a great watch and if bought right you will not lose much. If you pay full retail then you will unless you hold the watch for a long time and the msrp rises.

I think on today’s watches , yellow gold just isn’t as popular as it once was and has been superseded in popularity by the other precious metals - WG, RG, Pt.
Doesn’t mean it’s not a beautiful watch, and if you love it that’s what matters the most .. congrats !

Personally I like this watch and YG.
In terms of value to flip, I think you will lose some in the end.
But you're not buying to flip, so enjoy what you like!

I personally like TT YG. It might not be in high demand but that's all the better for the ones looking for it. Hopefully you're able to get a good price when you buy then you won't have to worry as much about resale value.

I do not like two tone.

As for value, when do you plan to sell it?

I did not fill in the poll because if a watch holds value or not is the wrong argument to buy imho.
Does your car hold value ? Or your John Lobbs ? Or your bespoke suit ?

It's easy to fall in love with the 116713LN because it's arguably the best looking TT ever made and makes any other SS reference looking (BLRO exempted) like a plain Jane

I had the chance to buy this in September...I walked into the AD with no purchase history and said I was in the market for my first Rolex but was frustrated with the lack of supply.

After they were satisfied I wasn't wasting their time, they said they conveniently had a GMT 116713LN in the vault.

Sure enough, they brought it out in the casket and I could have purchased it on the spot, but in the end I elected to put some cash down on the CHNR which I was told would be about 6 months away.

The fact that you could walk in off the street with no purchase history and land one was telling. I think you'd eventually see a small appreciation on it over time but it's clearly a "if you love it, more power to you" reference.

Lol I am patiently waiting for a panda when I see a guy on the Aussie FB watch selling page with not 1 but 2 new pandas for sale!!
Very frustrating!! (price in Aussie pesos)
Of course I can not afford to pay over MSRP and I am hoping to one day pick one up off from my local AD list.

Rolex Reality

I hear what you’re saying. The problem is, the AD’s out in my neck of the woods have no clue what stock they will get and when. And in order to be considered for a BLNR, I have to have a 20K purchase history (on Non-professional models only) in order to get on the waitlist. For the CHNR, the threshold is 35K purchase history. Given those options, I went for the 116713LN, plus it also gave me the
sparkle in my eye and visceral reaction, much like your photo.

It’s crazy. But it’s where the Rolex market is at currently. I’ve already moved past the disappointment and frustration.

Agreed

Refreshing to hear someone else also thinks the 116713LN is awesome looking and makes the SS models look plain. I can’t help but agree.

Ultimately, I bought it because it made me feel that “buzz” inside, and also, even though it’s TT, it’ll still hold value better than a DJ.

No plans

I don’t actually plan to sell it. I actually see myself keeping it for the rest of my life. I think classic yellow gold will always be appreciated in the long wring, despite changing fashion trends.
I only ask in case I need the funds in the future, as this model is certainly not at “entry level” prices.

Thanks!

thanks for the vote of support. Glad to know I’m not the only one :) I actually wanted the 36mm TT DJ fluted bezel with silver dial, but they don’t make it anymore! (Except for the one with the iced out VI and IX which looks a bit too blingy. a

When I got my DJ 2 in 2009, the only option they had was a Rolesor (TT). A few weeks later I saw a guy with a TT GMT and I thought that it looked better than my DJ.

If I could only have a TT Rolex ir would be the GMT.

Have fun!

Perhaps

Perhaps that’s true. But perhaps there’s also the possibility that the trickle over effect from SS demand over to TT will promote value retention.

It's a handsome watch but a bit too similar in looks to the equivalent TT Submariner - unless of course, the GMT function is essential to the purchase.

I went for the Sub purely on looks - the bezel appears to me to be less "busy'' or crowded.

Thanks, I appreciate you sharing your experience. I think at the end of the day, it’s not like I’m buying a Panerai or IWC.

True

Can’t argue with that logic! And who knows, YG may come back into vogue at some point. Or maybe in the long run prove to be a sleeper like the vintage root beer?

Its an awesome watch. YG is BOSS and the 116713LN and the 116613LB are THE two most iconic twin tone references available.

In person the TT GMT looks the bees knees. 100x better than a regular LN and it looks heaps more special than a BLNR as well. Thats coming from me who has owned all 3 of those GMT references.

I agree.... this watch looks better in person than in pictures. Especially the weight difference compared to steel models is quite noticeable. I almost did the same as you, but realized I really wanted the BLNR and decided to wait.

I'm not sure about the prices, but you shouldn't worry about it. Just enjoy the watch as long as you can... and if someday you decide to sell it, just sell it for the market price. There's no point in worrying about something you have no control over.

The 116713 has been calling out to me as well. I've owned the SS LN and the BLNR but they never stuck. I've started to look at the TT sub and the GMT...while I was initially thinking the Sub was the way to go, feeling the GMT as of late! I have a 114060 so the GMT would be a 'totally' diff watch and I feel like it makes 'more sense' to have a GMT watch in precious metal vs a diver.

Normally when I am wearing my GMT I use the bezel to time out every hour so I remember to check online prices for it to make sure the value is holding up. My only debate is whether I should check every 45 minutes.
