15400 as first watch ever...

Hey guys,

I’m expecting an incoming of 15400, as my first watch ever!
Was wondering if you can give me any tips, especially realted to the fact that I never used a hand watch before.
Some questions I have:
1. How to keep it from scratches? How to clean?
2. Do I wear in shower? Pool? Ocean?
3. Sleep with watch on?
4. Does the date need to be configured every month?

it was my second watch first AP. DO IT. i love the 15400! ive had almost everything and the bracelet and dial are fantastic. any of the colors are great.

1: Be well aware if your surroundings. Cleaning is a question I’ll let you use the search function to find the numerous answers members have given over the years.
2: No, maybe, probably not.
As per 1, you will (over a period of time) marr the polished surfaces of the bezel with the towel. In the pool, clowning about, etc, you’ve a greater chance for clunking it off something, if not the tiles themselves. Sipping a pina colada at the in-pool bar, then as with showering. Same goes for in the ocean, beach – sand (wet and dry) is but one hazard. Sun screen is a bit of a bugger to clean off, especially brushed surfaces!

If you're going to be devastated by scratches, don't get a RO. That being said, I've worn my two ROs carefully (had one since December 2017, the other since July 2018) and have not gotten any scratches on either bezel yet, although there are some on the bracelet. If I'd used it as my only watch, I definitely would have, so keep that in mind. The 15400 isn't "fragile," to be clear -- it should handle anything you throw at it (including showering and swimming in the pool or ocean) just fine, it's just highly finished so any scratches will stand out quite a bit. You can sleep with it on, but I might not, as you could easily bang it on something in your sleep. The date will need to be reconfigured at the end of months that don't have 31 days. You could get the Royal Oak with perpetual calendar complication to solve this, but that will set you back $61k.

It’s a great watch no question -

To avoid scratches you just need to practice some levels of awareness. For me at least this involves not intentionally putting my watch in harms way, but still wearing it for almost all daily activities and travel.



Cleaning is easy - a bit of dish soap, soft toothbrush and water. Alternatively use a specialist watch cleaning solution. For day to day a micro fibre cloth keeps most crud away.

Where and how you wear the watch is your choice. It’s waterproof enough for all three of those things.



I don’t sleep with my watch on, some people do but it’s not comfortable for me. That said on occasion it may be the best way to keep it close by and not knocked on the floor if you’re away from home etc. So once or twice now I have worn it 24/7 for safekeeping.

And yes you will need to reset the date occasionally depending on the month. Likewise when it runs out of charge and stops running.

Don’t forget you can and should wind it via the crown if it’s wound all the way down to stopping.

And also - to re-highlight from the poster above, the movement isn’t fragile. The only fragile thing is the finishing on the case/ bracelet and how well you want to preserve that is personal choice.

Can you elaborate on the towel issue? And is it true for rubbing against shirt as well?

A towel or t-shirt could theoretically cause some very, very light scratches, but honestly, I wouldn't worry about it at all. The only way you are really going to produce scratches by wiping your watch down or having it rub against your shirt is if the towel or shirt is dirty and dirt/sand/grit scratches the watch. Anything clean and soft won't damage your watch at all.

This is the type of wear mine has after a year of daily use. The polished surfaces will pick up light swirls from rubbing on things day to day but it’s not really noticeable unless you look closely at certain angles / right lighting.

Likewise - the brushed finishing can also get some marks on it.

Just don’t use abrasive things to wipe the watch and you will be fine. Mine gets a T-shirt wipe from time to time without issue, it’s not much different from wearing it inside a long sleeve garment.

It’s a highly scratchable watch. Why wear it when sleeping or mowing the lawn?

It’s an beautiful piece, wear it accordingly.

That being said, don’t be neurotic and use common sense.
