5 or 6 digit polar Explorer

I have a BLNR and a 116610LV. I think my next purchase will be the polar Explorer. What are your thoughts between the 5 and 6 digit? I think the 40 mm is probably more my size.

I've been thinking about this lately myself, and the 16570 is the front runner for me. The hands are too wide for my liking on the 6 digit. While I can appreciate the functionality of the larger hands and indices considering its intended use in prolonged total darkness, the aesthetics of the 5 digit model are much more to my liking.

I own both (5 digit black dial / 6 digit polar) and imo the 216570 polar is the winner. Granted, I have a 7.25” wrist and prefer 40mm - 43mm watches. I love the white dial in 42mm.

Rolex does not produce many white dial variants in the professional line up, let alone on a brushed bracelet. The orange GMT hand is a nice throwback to the 1655. The case size is a lower profile so it slides under the sleeve or cuff. It’s not super common in the wild, it’s accessible through an AD, and imo it’s a home run-

All comes down to your preference on size. Do you want something more subdued or with more wrist presence? I prefer (and own) the 5 digit, but the 6 digit is a beautiful piece with a better bracelet. What is the rest of your collection like? If you mostly have under 42mm watches, then the new 6 digit model will give you an opportunity to get a more substantial watch.

The 5 digit models feel comparatively light and insubstantial to me. You're paying for quite a lot of air in the bracelet. They both look great though.

As ever it comes down to personal preference. It works well for me, visually and on my wrist at 42mm. It's super legible and the long lasting, fat lumes are beautiful. Happily for you, both are easy to get and not appreciating rapidly.

You can't go wrong either way.

Your other watches wear large for their sizes so I'd vote 6-digit in this case. If you can, try one on before buying.

If the rest of your collection were 5-digit then I'd say 16570 without hesitation.

The Explorer II is one of the few 6 digits I actually prefer so its a tough choice personally, but you can see in my sig below I’m biased towards 5 digit models anyway. I say go with what you like being you already own 2 6 digit models, but if you do choose a 5 digit then I would opt for the newer version w engraved Rehaut & 3186 movement.

6 digit. The 5 is a stripped GMT. Though it is a cool watch, I’d take a GMT.
The 6 digit is its own unique animal in the lineup, and all changes from the five were for the sake of legibility in extreme conditions. To me it’s the closest model today to the old school, true tool watch lineage. But you should get what you like!

Have you tried either of them yet?
All good fun, but people will mostly post their personal preference here. Mine being the 216570, having owned both models - I prefer the size and all of the upgrades, especially the bracelet and clasp. The orange hand is a nice nod to the original.

Both are great. The 5 digit Explorer II is some of the best value in the Rolex market. It is difficult to go backwards on the bracelet. I have a 5 digit Submariner Date and as much as I love the charm of the smaller case and scaled down size, the bracelet is inferior technically even if it does the same job. I'm wearing my 6 digit Explorer II at work today and I love it. There are many who don't, but I think the larger case size and availability in a white dial is a nice contrast to the GMT-Master II.

I have never had a five digit Explorer II though picked up the six digit with black dial, fairly soon after release. Thought it was a great watch, very well designed and constructed but just felt it was a little too big on the wrist even though it sat fairly flat. Would not rule out another one though if the opportunity presented!

I own both and love them both. Try them both on before you buy and you won’t go wrong with which reference you choose.
