Present for my dad, need some recommendations

Folks, I’m looking at buying a watch for my dad as a surprise and need some pointers.

He’s an older boy and always up to something; upon waking he may decide to harrass some 100ft trees with his chainsaw, by lunch have stripped down an engine and end the day with a nice bit of fencing; regardless, watch never comes off. He has big wrists and hands so he needs something fairly robust. He can’t stand metal bracelets, and will no doubt cause it some damage over time which it will simply just have to deal with. Price range up to around £750

If definitely not, then rubber more so than leather, with option later for fabric/sailcoth strap.

Rubber strap sounds like the most comfy option of all mentioned.

Don’t think it’s enough to get you into preowned omega territory, otherwise that may be an option.

I would look at some of the Seiko Turtles. At 45.5 mm they are big and robust and within your budget. You can also change straps very easily.

If he wants something robust/he can beat up, have you looked at any of the Ocean Crawler pieces? The sapphire bezel is cool, very 50 fathoms-ish

You’ve stated what he’ll get up to, do you think even spending £750 is sensible in those circumstances?
In direct reply to your query, would he appreciate or discern the additional cost, or would he still be surprised and pleased with a simple and robust G-Shock?
He’s your dad, so anything we suggest is only a guess at best.

If he currently is watchless, maybe an inocuous conversation about why that is will give you something to consider or kill the notion stone dead, buying him something he’d have more need of.

All very valid.

Sensible, no, not really tbh. I know it will get damaged but any damage thats done is just a product of his lifestyle, one that really hasn’t changed since he was about 10 yrs old, which was quite a long time ago.

He is a different generation and would never ever consider spending such money on a watch. I am extremely fortunate to be in a position where I can, which has most definitely not always been the case.

In the end. I know he likes to see a nice watch but would never think to buy himself one. Ergo I would like for him to have a nice watch. And all the accumulated marks and whatever it picks up along the way is just another part of his story.

I don’t know if either of us will benefit from it but there’s no more space for another chainsaw.
