Potential scam avoided

Being new to this forum, I Put a WTB thread up and was contacted by PM from a user saying he had a watch and to contact him by email. I took a brief look at his profile and posts which he only had around 30, and they were mostly short posts or selling tudors and the such. So I asked for references which he gave a few of and I contacted each and they all gave good reviews of their dealings. Some also didn’t have much activity on here but some did. So we emailed back and forth and agreed upon a price, but the seller seemed in a hurry to get payment and forcing the transaction. The grammar (lots of commas in between everything) and writing also seemed very off and sometimes repetitive. It didn’t feel right. After we exchanged info, the name given to me by the seller didn’t match his name on bank info. I did one more follow up to confirm the sellers name and information given with the reference he gave me with most activity on TRF. This is where things get really weird, the reference who I spoke to just a day earlier by PM, questioned how our message was threaded and had no knowledge of us speaking earlier. He said he never dealt with this person before, and didn’t write the PM to me from his account verifying his dealings with this person. We’re not sure if the reference’s account was somehow compromised. I immediately emailed the seller saying his references didn’t check out and I wouldn’t be going ahead with the deal.

I can’t 100% prove that this was a scam and that’s reason I didn’t put username. Luckily I stuck to my instinct here and treaded carefully. Make sure to always buy from trusted sellers, do your own research on references and if something doesn’t feel right walk away.

Glad you did enough research to expose the probable scam.

WTB is a leading cause of scam attempts. I’d avoid these whenever possible. Nearly anything you’d like to buy can be found listed somewhere for sale

Glad you avoided a possible scam. I usually just go find the watch and the seller myself as it make the filter process much easier for me.

I think you need to report it to MOD....I think he's a scammer. They should be able to do more investigation w/ his IP. I rather see him banned now then scamming someone else later on.

AND, "Go With Your Gut". You usually get a feeling about these things, where something you can't put your finger on makes you feel uneasy.

Good call! For the amount of coin we're spending on these watches, everything has to feel just right.

Yes I’d say it was clearly a scam attempt, and if I understand correctly, someone hijacked a member’s account and sent a PM from said member’s message system? That’s a problem and should be reported to the mods.

What could you possibly need that requires a wtb... it’s like asking to be scammed

I thought it might be a helpful Sub-Forum if I was in the market for another watch. But, considering what has happened, I wouldn't post there.
